Abandon Ship! Social Stratification Simulation Teacher Guide Intro: This is a great class period activity to introduce and/or demonstrate the pervasiveness of social stratification. Step by Step Instructions: Sort students into groups of 8. If a group has less than 8 than students may need to assume multiple roles Assign each student a role, and hand them the “handout” for their character. They will assume this role. Their objective is to secure a spot on the lifeboat. Give students a couple of minutes to read their handout and get familiar with their character. Assemble students in groups physically. Inform them they are to create a list of 5 members that will be granted access on the lifeboat. Under no circumstances will more than 5 members be allowed a spot- it would cause the raft to potentially sink. Give students a 15 minute timer to complete their list of 5. Make sure students know that they each need to share out to the group all of the details about their character. It is important that students base their decisions on the facts. After selections are made have students return to typical seats and go through the discussion questions together The slides provide a handful of reflection questions but feel free to use your own. I like to try to investigate what students chose not to share. For example, often the elementary school teacher opts not to share they are $89,000 in debt. This can start a great conversation around how societal standards invoke shame on those in difficult financial standing Notes: I often offer a couple points extra credit, or a piece of candy, or some other kind of incentive to those that gain a spot on the boat. I recommend this to boost engagement and bring more passion to the activity. Collaborative Poster SEL Community Building

In this collaborative poster, the class will come together to create a poster that stands for what each student believes in. The poster has a rainbow with balloons and stars and the quote that is spelled out is "In our class, we are kind and respectful." Each student will get to color a piece of this puzzle. There are 30 pieces. The poster will measure 23 inches height by 35 inches wide. This will be a fun activity for each student to contribute into one large poster. This poster can be posted in the classroom, on the bulletin board on on the door. This poster is great for first, second, third, fourth, and fifth grades. In this file, you will receive 30 student pages with directions on each page, a full color picture of the outcome, a picture of the black and white version as well as the black and white version that is divided into 30 pieces. In the beginning of the school year, it is important to do activities that build community and shared values. When doing this poster, students can also talk about what else they believe to be important in the classroom as a community. I work as a school counselor for K-8th grade. Theodor Schwann – Fact Sheet, Quiz & Interactive Version (PDF & H5P) This lesson-ready material introduces students to Theodor Schwann 🧪 and his contribution to one of the most important concepts in biology: the cell theory 🔬. What worked really well in my class was the final task: students created their own questions based on the material and exchanged them with a partner. Making Policy: No Vehicles in the Park!

Something you probably know that your students might not? Making rules is a lot harder than it looks! This take on a classic activity is a great ice breaker for a conversation on policy, and is a lasting and memorable activity that can be referenced back to as the year goes on. Essentially, the city wants to pass a new law prohibiting vehicles in the park. Like often in policy, this simple rule gets far more complex when nuance is introduced. Students first learn about policy and law, and are then tasked with creating policy and law of their own. After they have created a no vehicles in the park policy, their policy is put to the test as exception after exception is put forth. What counts as a vehicle? What about non-motorized vehicles? Bikes? Ambulances? The list goes on! Students have the opportunity to dive into the complex world of policy creation as their policy is picked apart by exceptions.
