If you're searching for a novel approach to teach your middle schoolers about ancient history, the Become a Sumerian Brick Builder will surely captivate them. This resource provides a hands-on STEM activity that is engaging, stimulating, and enjoyable. Explaining to my 6th grade students that the Sumerians were pioneers in brick building made little sense to them until they experienced it firsthand. They were tasked with creating their own mud bricks just as the ancient Sumerians did, and this tangible exercise enabled them to appreciate the intricate challenges these early brick builders faced. They delighted in bringing their homemade bricks to class and collaboratively constructing a Ziggurat. Their most favorite part, unsurprisingly, was the demolition of their creation. Rather than merely giving lectures, assigning textbook readings, and having students answer questions — which can be dull and off-putting — this activity stimulates active learning. The project incorporates a written assignment that students complete independently, which can be utilized for both History and English Language Arts grading. We are all aware that many students forget learned material shortly after they've been tested on it. This interactive project, however, is bound to leave a lasting impression, instilling knowledge they will carry with them long after they leave your class. Experts in the field underscore the benefits of project-based learning (PBL), stating that it is an effective and enjoyable way to acquire important skills needed for school and life success. While traditional education can often be viewed as dull and irrelevant, PBL engages students, making them active learners. Standards like Common Core stress the real-world application of knowledge and skills to enhance problem-solving capabilities. PBL not only deepens students' understanding of the content but also aids in longer retention compared to conventional teaching methods. Pizza Fractions Project – 2-Day Class Activity

This is a Pizza Fractions Project! This activity is designed to be done over the course of two days, at the middle or end of a 3rd Grade Fractions unit. I decorated my classroom to look like an Italian restaurant and had pictures of Italy on the Smartboard. I also made an Italian music station on Internet radio and had spaghetti sauce (with breadsticks for dipping) in the crockpot! Students wore paper chef hats, which were inexpensive on Amazon. The pizzas they created were done in pizza boxes, but you could use long construction paper or poster board, just as easily. I also had students do a close reading about the history of Pizza, which I got from Learnzillion. You will need to run the pizza template and toppings off on colored paper or cardstock and I had them cut out in advance, to save time. Students can add tomato sauce and cheese with crayons, if desired Page 14: Green Peppers-run off on green card stock or construction paper and cut out. I used 12 copies of each topping for a class of 24. Page 15: Pepperoni-run off on red card stock or construction paper and cut out. Page 16: Pineapple-run off on yellow card stock or construction paper and cut out. Page 17: Mushrooms-run off on white card stock or construction paper and cut out. Punctuation Pasta Project

This is a Punctuation Pasta Project for big kids! This project is focused on commas, parentheses, and dashes with a bonus quotation mark review included. I love room transformations; students are going to remember moments and therefore, the content associated with those moments much more easily. Create an Italian restaurant in your classroom with plastic tablecloths or red and white butcher paper. I bought glass candleholders & electric tealights at the dollar store that I repurpose for other room transformations. Italian music/photos on the board, a crockpot full of simmering tomato sauce & some breadsticks on the tables hit all the senses! Place a table tent and one punctuation card per pair of students on each table. You will also need a plate or bowl full of dried pasta. For this particular lesson, you will need spaghetti or fettuccini for the dashes, small elbow macaroni for commas & quotation marks, & large elbow macaroni for parentheses. Students simply place the pasta in the spots on the cards where the punctuation is missing. I do one activity at a time (have students complete with their partner and then go over answer key before distributing next card). Early finishers can work on pasta plate practice activity. This lesson was specifically designed for 6th grade, and the accompanying PowerPoint teaches L.6.2a, but the pasta punctuation cards can work with L.4.2a, and L.5.2a, as well. There is a companion slideshow that will provide rules, practice and examples!
