Black History Month is an annual observance that takes place in February in the United States (and in October in the United Kingdom and Canada). It is a time to recognize and celebrate the contributions, achievements, and history of African Americans. The origins of Black History Month can be traced back to the efforts of Carter G. Woodson, an African American historian and scholar. In 1926, Woodson established "Negro History Week" to bring attention to the neglected history and accomplishments of Black individuals. This week was chosen to coincide with the birthdays of Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglass, two prominent figures in the fight against slavery and for civil rights. Over time, Negro History Week evolved into Black History Month. In 1976, it was officially recognized by the U.S. government and expanded to encompass the entire month of February. The month-long observance provides an opportunity to delve deeper into African American history, culture, and the ongoing struggle for equality and justice. During Black History Month, various events, activities, and programs are organized to educate and raise awareness about the contributions of African Americans. Schools, universities, museums, community organizations, and other institutions often host lectures, panel discussions, exhibitions, film screenings, and performances that highlight the achievements and experiences of Black individuals throughout history. Black History Month is an important time for reflection, learning, and honoring the achievements and struggles of African Americans. It serves as a reminder of the resilience, strength, and significant impact that Black individuals have had on society, as well as the ongoing need for social justice and equality for all. This political systems lesson is an engaging way to teach your students in 6th, 7th, 8th or 9th grade about the different political systems that are found around the world- throughout history and in our modern times. Students will work independently or as small groups to research five different kinds of political leadership: dictatorship, monarchy, oligarchy, theocracy, and democracy. They will complete independent research to discover information about the following topics: Rise to Power: How does this leader get selected- elections, by birth, another way? Actions: What are this leader's jobs when in power? Making laws? Known Associates: Who does this leader work with when they are in power? Ancient Examples: Provide examples of civilizations in history who had this type of leader. Current Examples: Provide examples of countries that currently have this type of leader. Pros: What are the positive aspects of this type of leader? Cons: What are the negative aspects of this type of leader? Students will present their information in a very unique way: on a handmade Wanted Poster: which can add a bit of fun to the lesson.
