SP or PS Confusion — Dyslexia Support Worksheets I made this resource for a dyslexic pupil who was flipping sp and ps in both reading and spelling — writing crips instead of crisp , waps instead of wasp . This pupil was not a new reader, but the flipping was persisting. This is a typical dyslexic confusion, and an easy one to overlook, because both are used. I could not find a suitable worksheet, so I made seven to do the job! How to use: The differentiated pack targets sp and ps endings systematically, starting with recognition and building towards independent writing. Work through the pages in order — each one prepares the child for the next. One page per session works better than tackling the pack in one sitting. Who is it for? Dyslexic learners at any grade and any child who reverses or confuses letter patterns. It works in one-to-one tuition, small intervention groups, or as a supported classroom activity. Sits neatly within a broader phonics or spelling programme. What's included — 5 worksheets, 6 pages: Page 1 + 2 — Read a short story featuring Frank and Jack, two workmen in a village. Underline every sp word. This is a low-pressure activity to reduce stress. There are 2 differentiated stories. Page 2 — Cut and sort word cards into two columns: sp or ps. Uses the plurals rule the child already knows — if s means more than one, it comes last. Page 3 — A second Frank and Jack story containing both sp and ps words. Underline and record the target words. There are 2 differentiated stories. Page 4 — Sentences with the final two letters missing. Sp or ps? Unambiguous sentences keep the focus on the spelling pattern, not the meaning. Page 5 — A picture prompt of Frank and Jack. Children write their own sentences using a provided word bank. Consolidates everything. Topics are varied and are accompanied by colorful graphics. Topics are meant to educate, yet entertain the modern student. These passages are perfect for the modern classroom. Whereas textbooks can become outdated in no time, any changes to technology or the world will result in updates to this product. Mixed Questions The mixed questions section of each lesson includes a variation of fivecomprehension, vocabulary and math questions. In addition, key reading strategies are frequently covered including cause & effect, summarizing, compare & contrast and making conclusions. Three of the questions will be MCQs and two will require a written response of some kind. Full answers and example responses appear at the end of the lesson. Spelling & Vocab Each reading passage contains a variety of words and phrases designed for Grade 2-3 students. Spelling and vocab activities provide the opportunity to build fluency with these words. As it can become quite mundane doing the same activities over and over, each lesson in a set will contain a different spelling and vocab activity . Writing Prompts Writing prompts are designed to continue the theme or lessons learned in the story. Students are persuaded to write in a variety of ways and each prompt includes several cues to help. As with the spelling/vocab section, writing prompts will vary. This includes research pieces, reading responses, poetry and creative writing prompts. Full Answer Keys Full answer keys and sample responses are provided so no matter how busy you are, you know you're covered! Mixed question answers provide evidence from the text, math questions contain the relevant workings. Answers are designed for use by the teacher, but also suitable as a handout to the student. The Phonics Advantage Progressive Emergent Reader Books slowly progress in the number of words on the page, number of words in a sentence, and the number of sentences on a page. The emergent readers reinforce sight-word vocabulary and word families. Great care was taken to use decodable words, and to review words from earlier stories. These emergent readers are formatted for easy reading on student’s digital devices. They can also be read on all computer screens, and be presented on white boards for whole-class reading experiences. The emergent readers can be downloaded to student’s digital devices, emailed to student’s homes, or posted on a class website that is password protected and open to your classroom only. This download is for Books 16 - 30 in Level 2. Level 2 is a mixture of themed books and short stories written with two to three sentences on each page. The product is a zip file containing three PDF files, each having five emergent readers. For subject diversity, each PDF of five emergent readers contains a book on animals (birds, frogs, bears), a trip (village farm, Lego club display, the big park), and something to do (origami, ride a merry-go-round, go tubing, make pancakes). In the Progressive Emergent Reader Series, there are 20 Books in Level 1. Level 2 comes in two parts, Books 1 – 15 and Books 16 – 30. All books focus on word families, decodable words, and reinforcing common word wall words to establish a solid core reading vocabulary.
