Leaf Sorting Activity: Kindergarten Science Projects
Science, Life Sciences, Nature & Plants, Biology, Grade 1, 2, Activities
Leaf Sorting Activity: Kindergarten Science Projects This Leaf Sorting lesson pack can help you to deliver the National Curriculum (or other Science curriculum for ages 5 to 6) for Science in Year 1. It is best carried out in autumn as the leaves fall, but can also be done in spring as new leaves emerge and children's interest in them can be excited. The Leaf Sorting Activity includes References to the relevant parts of the National Curriculum (but the activity does not have to be used in conjunction with the UK National Curriculum ). * 12 pictures of varying leaves, suitable for sorting according to vein pattern, formation and leaf properties (e.g. prickly/rounded edges, deep cut edges etc..) - in two sizes for whole class/group use or display. * a My Leaf recording worksheet * a sheet of 12 small pictures to sort, cut out and stick. How to sort leaves Leaves can be sorted according to several different factors. Sort by one property at a time. Edge - wavy, prickly, jagged, sharp etc… (let the children suggest ideas) Veins: One ‘spine’ vein with branches (many leaves) Like umbrella spokes (Nasturtium) Several main veins coming from base of leaf, with branches from each (Sycamore) Feel/look: soft, hairy, sharp, prickly, smooth, rough, tough, shiny etc… Colour: shade of green in spring/summer, or autumn colours (red, orange, brown, yellow etc…) Can the children find: All the prickly leaves? All the deeply notched leaves? All the leaves with leaflets? All the soft leaves? Etc… Children may dispute whether a leaf falls into a category or not. Use this as valuable discussion, always securing a good reason for their thinking. How to use the activity Class sorting: Let individual children hold up to 5 large leaf pictures. Can the children see two leaves that might match and say how they match? Now can they see if any other leaves fit that group - hold up the other leaf pictures one by one and see if they fit, passing the picture to another child to join the group, if that leaf fits. Does this leaf have …? Try sorting by various properties before letting the children take a leaf to sketch and describe on the ‘My leaf’ sheet. Group sorting: A small group of children can be challenged to find a way of sorting the leaves so that as many of them as possible are in a group. Or, more simply: Can you find the leaves that are pointed/sharp/have leaflets, are soft etc… Children can then be given the sheet of small leaves to sort in the way the teacher outlines. More! See our Autumn Leaves PowerPoint and All about Autumn PowerPoint What is included? 1 PDF with 13 pages: 12 small leaf pictures 12 large matching leaf pictures A sheet of 12 small pictures to sort, cut out and stick. Long Vowel worksheets EE
Special Resources, ELA, Special Education Needs (SEN), Language Development, Phonics, Reading, Spelling, Kindergarten, Preschool, Grade 1, 2, 3, Worksheets & Printables, Worksheets
Long Vowel worksheets EE This is a pack of 12 Phonic worksheets to teach the digraph ee, specially designed for those with special needs, including those with dyslexia or who may be suspected of being dyslexic, but will work equally well with young learners in Kindergarten/EYFS/Y1. These sheets are LETRS and UK GOV requirements aligned. These worksheets also align with most popular phonic programmes, including gRWI and Letters and Sounds. Who are these worksheets for? I have written them for pupils who struggle with processing information - especially sounds. This includes children who are DYSLEXIC or have ANY other kind of processing disorder. Such children may have failed with other methods of teaching phonics. Such pupils need activities that: ·are highly structured - one tiny step at a time building on the one before using only a limited number of words to start with and only using words that the child has already learnt to sound out, with no nasty surprises. ·Have only a little on each pageas these pupils tire easily. What makes these worksheets special? I have a powerful three-step process which I use with my special needs pupils, which is worked out over the course of the 12 worksheets: 1. See it!where we focus on becoming aware of the new sound in words. This involves first hearing the new sound in words and then seeing it in words (tracking). 2. Sound-it-out!Having learnt to see the new sound in words, we learn to sound out these words to read and write them. We begin by usingsound-it-out boxesfor reading and spelling which help the child to segment the word prior to blending the sounds together. Once the child can read and write individual words, we work on fluency by building familiarity with the common words in the new sound family. Once the child can sound the words out to read and spell confidently, we move on to recognising them/using them in longer reading and dictation passages, as soon as the child is able. I provide 2 reading passages with comprehension exercises and one dictation passage, with a page in the workbook dedicated to it, with room for a picture, which again cements understanding. 3. Write it! Incorporated into the above two steps, we constantly write the new sound. This adds a multi-sensory dimension to our work - we see with our eyes, we sound it with our mouth parts and voice, and then we move by writing. All three steps work together to help the child feel in control of his/her learning and to become a successful, confident learner. We finish each sound with a dictation which culminates our work before we remove on to the next sound. I try to give this a week after we finish the book, to act as revision. The dictation: Read this passage to your pupil, who should write it. Have the child read his/her work and check for errors. Make sure the writing is completely accurate before saying the child has finished, including full stops and capital letters correctly used. Flashcards are included with space to make more if appropriate. What is included in the pack: A front cover 12 Activities based on the 'Sound it out' principles. A dictation Flashcards What is included: 1 PDF with 12 activities This is one of a series. Find also: AR OR A-E All in the Lilibette's Resources Store!

Final NK Blend Worksheet: Phonemic Awareness activities
Special Resources, ELA, Special Education Needs (SEN), Language Development, Phonics, Kindergarten, Preschool, Worksheets & Printables, Worksheets
This final blend _NK fun, Find and Color worksheet for final blends is excellent for acquainting children orally with final consonant blends and helping them develop the necessary phonemic awareness in preparation for more advanced blending work, involving four phonemes. This activity is a great phonemic awareness activity. What is included in the pack? One PDF sheet for the final _NK blend. What do the worksheets involve? Pupils are instructed to combine the two letters on the worksheet and then look for objects that end with that consonant blend. Then, these items ought to be coloured, leaving the others uncoloured. Children can easily work on the sheet unaided once they have been instructed, although, with those children with special needs, it is strongly suggested that an adult works with the child for maximum benefit. How to use The introduction of the concept of final blends needs to be done thoroughly. When I work with children, especially those with a special need, I first like to teach children to blend two consonant letters. Then I work on developing the children's phonemic awareness: that being the ability to hear two consonant letters blended at the end of a word, easily. Some children find final blends easier than initial blends as they can sound out the first three sounds, and simply add a fourth: h-a-n: han-d. I call /n/ 'naughty' 'n' as he likes to hide in words: children are apt to miss out the nasal sound and spell hand as 'had'. I then ask them to sound back what they have written and we laugh. Often they can quickly insert the missing letter, having had plenty of practice aurally, such as this sheet affords. However all pupils need practice, some more than others. These worksheets can assist by first encouraging students to blend the two consonant letters and then by helping them to hear the blend at the end of a word. As often as you can, practice blending the letters in each final blend and encourage the students to follow suit. I find that modelling is key at this stage. Who are the final blends Find and colour worksheets for? Young learners Those with a special need Due to their non-babyish nature, they can be successfully used with older ESL/EFL pupils. Answer keys: The answer key is included on the sheet, in small print.

TW Beginning Blends Worksheets / Phonemic Awareness Activities
Special Resources, ELA, Special Education Needs (SEN), Language Development, Phonics, Kindergarten, Preschool, Worksheets & Printables, Worksheets
This TW fun, Find and Color worksheet for beginning blends is excellent for acquainting children orally with initial consonant blends and helping them develop the necessary phonemic awareness in preparation for more advanced blending work, involving four phonemes. What is included in the pack? One PDF sheet for the TW blend. What do the worksheets involve? Pupils are instructed to combine the two letters on each worksheet and then look for objects that start with that consonant blend. Then, these items ought to be coloured, leaving the others uncoloured. Children can easily work on the sheets unaided once they have been instructed, although with those children with special needs, it is strongly suggested that an adult works with the child for maximum benefit. How to use The introduction of the concept of initial blends needs to be done thoroughly. When I work with children, especially those with a special need, I first like to teach children to blend two consonant letters. Then I work on developing the children's phonemic awareness: that being the ability to hear two consonant letters blended at the beginning of a word, easily. This is difficult for some pupils and takes a lot of practice. These worksheets can assist by first encouraging students to blend the two consonant letters and then by helping them to hear the blend at the start of a word. As often as you can, practice blending the letters in each initial blend and encourage the students to follow suit. I find that modelling is key at this stage. Who are the initial blends Find and colour worksheets for? Young learners Those with a special need Due to their non-babyish nature, they can be successfully used with older ESL/EFL pupils. Answer keys: The answer key is included on the sheet, in small print.
