Teaching Prefixes and Suffixes for Reading Longer Words This practical teaching guide shows parents and tutors exactly how to help children decode multisyllabic words using prefixes and suffixes.. Learning to read longer words doesn't have to mean memorising a rulebook. In fact, the more rules you throw at a struggling reader, the more likely they are to freeze. What children need is a simple, reliable decoding strategy they can use every time they meet an unknown multisyllabic word. That's exactly what Beginnings and Endings gives them. This short, practical guide teaches children to chunk longer words by finding the vowel sounds and building chunks around them. Pupils are taught to take each vowel sound and add the consonants next to it, before and/or after — keeping any blends or double letters that belong together. Example: important: we keep OR together → im–por–tant, or imp–or–tant, or im–port–ant. There’s no wrong answer here — the goal is the whole word, not a perfect split. To help them with this process, we teach them common prefixes and suffixes: spotting familiar prefixes and suffixes and using them as stepping stones into the rest of the word. No complicated syllable-splitting rules. No jargon. Just a clear phonics-based method that works — and that children can apply independently once they've seen it modelled a few times. We call them beginnings and endings as the words 'prefix' and 'suffix' are meaningless at first to a child and can put an extra hurdle in the way of success. The guide covers the most useful prefixes — be, de, re, pre and un — alongside a solid set of suffixes: -ful, -less, -ness, -ly, -er and -ment . Each section moves from two-syllable words up to longer ones, so you can start where your child is confident and build from there. There's also a step-by-step worked example showing exactly how to talk a child through the decoding process — because children need to see the thinking, not just be told to "break it into syllables" and left to figure out what that means. This is the Reading Made Simple approach to decoding longer words, and I use it with struggling readers of all ages — from young children just moving beyond single-syllable words to older students who've been stuck for years. The moment a child realises they can tackle a word like reorganise by pulling it apart into manageable chunks is the moment longer words stop being a mystery.

Daily Calendar Routine: High and Low Temperature Measurement K 1st 2nd

Here’s a quick way to include real-world math , finding the difference (subtraction), and number lines in your daily calendar routine each morning in kindergarten, 1st grade, or 2nd grade! Have your students record the day's high and the day's low temperature in your city on this large thermometer. Then you can find the difference : which is the daily temperature range! INCLUDES METRIC (℃) & IMPERIAL (℉) How to Use this Calendar Routine: • Note: This product is created to be printed on large 11x17 paper! • Print a large thermometer (with your preferred units C or F) in colour. • Laminate the thermometer. • Then hang it up as part of your morning calendar routine. • Each day, you will look up the day's high and the day's low temperature in your city. • With your students, record the date, the high temperature, and the low temperature on the laminated chart using a whiteboard marker. • Have one or two students come up to circle the high & low temperature on the thermometer. • Then students can help you calculate the difference between these two temperatures to determine the daily temperature range. Many strategies can be used: Counting the dashes in between the two numbers Using mental math or known benchmarks (make a 10) Using the standard subtraction algorithm How to Use This as a Worksheet: • You could also print a thermometer on legal-sized paper to use as a worksheet for your students to complete. This allows assessment of their knowledge of number lines measurement finding the difference integers (if using Celsius in the winter) Grades to Use With: This daily calendar routine is created for students in kindergarten, 1st grade, or 2nd grade. It could also be used in older elementary grades when introducing integers (if you use Celsius in the winter months). Finally, it could be used in life skills classes where appropriate. Teaching Theme vs. Main Idea: The Complete Reading Comprehension Toolk

Let’s be honest, teaching "Theme" is tough. It is one of the most abstract concepts for upper elementary students to grasp. If I had a nickel for every time I asked a student, "What is the theme of this story?" and they just retold the entire plot back to me, I’d have a lot of nickels. It is a classic struggle in grades 3-6. They constantly mix up the "universal lesson" (Theme) with the specific summary (Main Idea). I designed this resource pack simply because I needed better tools to handle this confusion in my own classroom. I needed visuals that made sense to kids right away, and I needed materials that didn't take me hours to prep. The hand-drawn style is intentional to make it feel friendly and approachable for students. Here is exactly what you get in this download (it’s all ready to print and use): 4 Classroom Anchor Charts: These are meant to be hung up as constant reminders. The most valuable one here is the side-by-side comparison chart of "Theme vs. Main Idea." It really helps stop the confusion. There is also a "Common Themes List" to help students who struggle to find the right vocabulary. Interactive Notebook Pages: I made a black-and-white, single-page version of the four charts. Students can cut these out and glue them into their reading journals. They love coloring them in while I teach, and it gives them a personal reference tool. The "Theme Explorer" Worksheet: This page forces students to slow down. It has separate boxes for the Main Idea and the Theme, and crucially, asks for text evidence to back up their thinking. It's great for independent reading accountability. Quick Exit Tickets: A simple tool for the last five minutes of class. Hand them out to see immediately who understood the lesson and who needs a check-in tomorrow. This pack isn't about fluff; it's about practical tools to help your students finally understand the "heart of the story" and saving you some prep time.
