This a twenty eight page PowerPoint lesson for teaching multiplication of fractions both conceptually and with the standard algorithm. The first slides explain the meaning of the parts of a fraction. Next multiplication of fractions is compare to "of" and "use". Four multiplication problems are shown and explained using circle fraction models. Next students are asked to look at these 4 problems and see a pattern. The algorithm for multiplying fractions is revealed. Students are shown a problem using the algorithm and then are asked to complete 3 problems on their own. Finally a summary of the lesson is given and an exit problem is given to the students. All answers are given withing the lesson. This lesson corresponds to Common Core 5th grade math standard: This PowerPoint can be edited to meet the needs of your students. 5.NF.B.4 Apply and extend previous understandings of multiplication to multiply a fraction by a fraction. a.
