Letter G: PowerPoint and Worksheets: Lesson 7
Special Resources, ELA, Special Education Needs (SEN), Language Development, Phonics, Kindergarten, Preschool, Worksheets, Worksheets & Printables
Learn Initial Sounds G: Lesson 7 teaches the letter Gg and its related phonic sound through a 32-slide PowerPoint lesson and 5 follow-up activity worksheets. All you need to teach the phonic letter F! Whether in school or at home, this series of phonic presentations can help you effectively teach initial/beginning sounds to all pupils, including those with special needs/dyslexia. This lesson is part of a synthetic, systematic phonics programme for all abilities including those suspected of being dyslexic. This lesson is in the first stage of the Reading Made Simple programme where we teach the initial, or beginning, sounds. The ability to hear the initial/beginning sound is stressed throughout, while we learn to associate each letter with its sound. Each lesson can stand alone but the activities will presume knowledge of the previous letters in the alphabet as Reading Made Simple teaches the initial sounds in alphabetical order. Special features of the Learn Initial Sounds G: Lesson 7 The PowerPoint is silent so that you can interact with your child in the best way for them: full instructions are provided at the bottom of each slide - be sure to show 'Notes'. Science of Reading Aligned Truly phonetic; no 'i' for 'ice-cream'. We focus heavily on phonemic awareness which is so necessary for a head start in phonics The child is given plenty of opportunities to learn the necessary skills - perfection is not expected in lesson 1. Still, the teacher will look for the development of the necessary skills as the child works through the alphabet. What is included in the Learn Initial Sounds G: Lesson 7? A 32-slide PowerPoint which teaches phonemic awareness, letter/sound correspondence and letter formation along with practice games 5 follow-up worksheets How can the Learn Initial Sounds G: Lesson 7 be used? It can be used in multiple ways: As the child learns each sound, you can use the PowerPoint lesson to reinforce your own lesson It can be sent home for a child to watch with his/her parents after being taught the letter Gg in class - this will then act as revision as well as training the parent as to what is necessary to help the child. Use in class Use at home by parents or for home education Suggested Method: Introduce each letter in turn to your pupil. Have a flashcard of the letter ready. Say each letter's sound to the child and ask him/her to repeat it thrice. Explain that some words begin with this sound. Give an example. Use the lesson as teacher training for yourself, to see how to teach your child, or use it with the child. Choose suitable activities (matching the ability of your child) from the pak of worksheets. Notes are suggestions only - use language appropriate to your pupil and be sure to interact naturally. However, do make sure that you focus on the hearing of the sounds at the beginning of words as this is much overlooked in the quest to help children learn the initial sounds as quickly as possible. Technical help: Use the PowerPoint in normal mode so that you can see the notes and use the 'Draw' tool when prompted. Some slides are interactive. TR: Beginning Blends Worksheets
Reading, ELA, Language Development, Phonics, Spelling, Special Education Needs (SEN), Special Resources, Kindergarten, Grade 1, Worksheets, Worksheets & Printables, Word Searches
TR Beginning Blends Worksheets A beginning blends worksheet to help teach 'TR', such as trip, trap and trunk etc... Beginning blends are often tricky to learn, especially for children with a processing difficulty, such as dyslexia. By targeting the individual blends, children can be helped over this stage of phonic learning, so crucial for further success in reading and spelling. What is included in the pack? One PDF sheet for the TR initial blend. What does the worksheet involve? Pupils are instructed to combine the two letters on the worksheet and then complete words by adding the letters 'tr'. They then read the words they have made and write them under the pictures. They are then given six more words to make by writing 'tr' in the spaces. Once read, the child must look for the words in the grid. Children can easily work on the sheet unaided once they have been instructed, although it is strongly suggested that an adult works with those children with special needs for maximum benefit. How to use The introduction of the concept of beginning blends needs to be done thoroughly. When I work with children, especially those with a special need, I first like to teach children to blend two consonant letters. Then I work on developing the children's phonemic awareness: that being the ability to hear two consonant letters blended at the beginning of a word, easily. I will use flashcards - a time-honoured, efficient method of teaching, to help them become familiar with the blends, asking them to both read and write the blends. This is difficult for some pupils and takes a lot of practice. These worksheets can assist by first encouraging students to blend the two consonant letters and then by helping them to hear the blend at the start of a word. As often as possible, practice blending the letters in each initial blend and encourage the students to follow suit. I find that modelling is key at this stage. Who are the initial blends Find and colour worksheets for? Young learners Those with a special need Due to their non-babyish nature, they can be successfully used with older ESL/EFL pupils.

Reading Comprehension Passages Fiction Set 1 Snapshot Title: Reading Comprehension: Fiction Grade 4–5 Animals Genre: Fiction anthology (short animal-themed stories, plus a few informational-style passages) Subject: Reading (ELA) Primary Topic: Animal-themed short texts and comprehension practice Estimated Guided Reading Level (A–Z): Q What This Teaches Best Reading comprehension across multiple short texts (students answer “Mixed Questions” on plot details, vocabulary-in-context, and reasoning tied to each passage). Character feelings and traits from evidence (e.g., fear, relief, helpfulness, responsibility, truthfulness, and teasing/bullying moments are shown through dialogue and actions). Sequencing and cause/effect (several lessons ask students to put events in order, matching what happened first/next/last in the story). Vocabulary development in authentic context (words like cautiously, evaporate, tournament, responsibility, and endangered appear in the reading passages and are reused in skill pages). Cross-curricular knowledge through reading (animal care/adoption, zoo habitats/endangered species, and Chinese New Year traditions are explained within the texts). Learning Goals Identify key events in a short story and explain how they connect in order. Describe a character’s feelings or traits using specific details from the text. Determine the meaning of unfamiliar words and phrases using context clues. Explain a problem and solution in a passage using text evidence. Compare how different passages present animal-related situations (pets, wildlife, zoo animals, or traditions). Passages Include 1.Donny's Glasses: Donny is being chased by a monster. Or so he thinks! 2.Hare & Bear: Hare & Bear have a cup of tea together in the warmth. 3.Maggie's Turtle: Maggie is desperate to win the fishing competition. 4.New Pup: Hugh finds out a new puppy isn't as fun as he hoped. 5.Naughty Cat: Lizzie can't find any of her stuff.
