The Flip Flop Fiasco is an exciting math activity that your students will enjoy. Here is the breakdown of the scenario students will be prompted with: All the kids in our class wore flip flops last Friday. There were so many stubbed toes that our teacher called the day a ‘fiasco’! At the end of the day, our teacher sat down to find out just how many bandages she’d used from her box, which had 1,000 bandages in it at the beginning of the day. Using the following information, the attached work-mat, and your mathematical genius, can you figure out how many bandages our teacher used and how many are left in her box? o Our class usually has 26 students but 3 were absent. o During first recess, the following fiascos occurred… 1. 12 students stubbed two of their toes. 2. 8 students stubbed three. 3. The rest of the students didn’t stub any toes. o During second recess, things got really bad… 1. 9 students stubbed 3 of their toes. 2. 7 students stubbed four. 3. 5 students stubbed all the toes on their left feet. 4. The rest of the students didn’t stub any toes. o And last recess was the worst… 1. 6 students stubbed all the toes on their right feet. 2. 8 students stubbed 7 of their toes. 3. The rest of the students stubbed all the toes on both feet! Extensions (If you want to impress your teacher) o What if our teacher’s box had started with 500 bandages? How many would she have left after our flip flip ‘fiasco’? o What if twice as many toes had been stubbed? How many bandages would our teacher have used? How many would she have had left in a box of 1,000? ***Answer key included

Algebra 1 Emergency Sub Plans - 5 Days Self-Checking Worksheets

Algebra 1 Emergency Sub Plans - 5 Days Self-Checking Worksheets
Algebra, Math, Grade 8, 9, 10, Worksheets & Printables, Lesson Plans, Teacher Tools, Worksheets

Being out of the room for a week is hard enough in Algebra, where the person covering your class usually cannot teach the content. This packet is built around that exact problem. It hands a substitute 5 complete class periods that need no preparation, no subject knowledge, and no grading. Across the 5 days students work through expressions & order of operations, solving linear equations, linear functions & slope, systems of linear equations, exponents & polynomials. Every day is two pages. The first opens with a fully worked example of the day’s skill, so a student who gets stuck reads the page rather than asking the substitute a question nobody in the room can answer, and then works a set of scaffolded problems that move from straightforward to more demanding. The second page is a self-checking activity: the answers either trace a connected path through a grid or decode into a punchline, which means a wrong answer announces itself to the student and gets fixed without an adult ever adjudicating it. Each of those pages also carries a find-the-mistake exercise and a challenge problem for anyone who finishes early. The routine is the point: the same five-minute opener every day, so students settle without being asked twice. A run sheet at the front tells whoever is covering exactly what to hand out each day and what to print, and a full set of answers waits at the back for your return. Every day stands on its own, so the set can run in any order, or a single day can be pulled on its own when you only need one. Designed for grades 8-10, printed in a clean low-ink layout, and equally at home in a homeschool schedule. Nothing here needs a calculator, a textbook, a login, or an internet connection.

Environmental Science Bell Ringers FULL YEAR - 180 Daily Warm-Ups

Environmental Science Bell Ringers FULL YEAR - 180 Daily Warm-Ups
Environmental Science, Earth and Environmental Sciences, Science, Earth Sciences, Grade 9, 10, 11, 12, Worksheets, Worksheets & Printables

This is a full year of environmental science bell-ringers - 180 short daily prompts that give high school students a steady, five-minute way to begin class. The set spans an entire course. It opens with what environmental science is and how it differs from advocacy, then moves through systems and feedback loops, ecosystems, habitat and niche, the world's biomes and the climate patterns that produce them, freshwater and marine systems, energy flow through trophic levels, food webs and biomagnification, and the carbon, water, nitrogen and phosphorus cycles. The second quarter covers population density and distribution, exponential and logistic growth, carrying capacity and limiting factors, reproductive strategies and survivorship curves, human population growth and the demographic transition, age structure, species interactions, ecological succession and keystone species, invasive species, and extinction and conservation biology. The third quarter turns to resources: freshwater supply and aquifer depletion, water quality and treatment, soil formation and texture, agriculture and soil degradation, sustainable farming and integrated pest management, forests and land use, fossil fuels, nuclear energy and half-life, and renewable energy with the tradeoffs among sources. The final quarter covers air pollution and the criteria pollutants, smog and acid deposition, indoor air quality, stratospheric ozone depletion and its recovery, solid waste and recycling, hazardous waste and dose-response toxicology, the greenhouse effect and the evidence for climate change, impacts along with mitigation and adaptation, externalities and ecosystem services, and environmental law, policy and personal action. Prompts are arranged into 36 weekly pages, each holding five days of work a teacher can hand out on Monday and collect on Friday. Every week rotates through the same five kinds of thinking: a vocabulary term used rather than recited, a short reading with a question that requires reading it, a data or analysis question, a quick multiple-choice check, and a question that asks students to state a claim and back it with evidence. That last one is the reasoning skill the standards weight most heavily and the one students practice least, so it appears every single Friday for 36 weeks. Environmental science is a subject argued in numbers, so the Wednesday slot hands students real figures rather than describing them: 850 gigatons of carbon in the atmosphere against 38,000 in the ocean, 8 milligrams per liter of nitrate below a fertilized field against 0.2 in forest, particulate matter at 45 micrograms per cubic meter against a standard of 12, a wind farm at a 35 percent capacity factor against a gas plant at 85, carbon dioxide from 280 parts per million before 1800 to above 420 today. Every one of those calculations was written to resolve to a clean value, so students get real practice reading data without a five-minute warm-up turning into an arithmetic exercise. Everything is print-first: one clean PDF that copies well, uses little ink, prints two-sided so a full week fits on a single sheet, and needs no student accounts, devices, or logins. A complete answer key covers all 180 prompts, and a standards page lists the NGSS high school codes and the CCSS literacy in science and technical subjects codes the set actually addresses - each one earned by a recurring prompt slot rather than claimed in general. Built for grades 9-12 and useful in an AP Environmental Science section as daily review, it works as an opener while attendance is taken, as an exit slip at the end of the period, as spiral review before an exam, or as ready-made work to leave for a substitute teacher on short notice.
