This is a Fractions Task Packet for your 3rd grade math students. Students will explore fractions of a whole and fractions of a set. There are 2 different tasks included: 1. The Birthday Cake – You are having a birthday party! You invited all your friends to your party, but you are not sure how many of them will come. You plan on cutting your cake into equal pieces, so everyone gets the same sized piece. Create at least 4 scenarios in which you show the cake, how it was cut, how many total pieces were eaten, and what FRACTION of the cake each friend ate. Things to consider: · How many friends showed up at the party? · How many pieces did you cut your cake into (the denominator)? · What shape do you want your cake to be? · How will you cut the cake so the pieces will be equal? · Do YOU get a piece of cake? · If everyone gets a piece of cake, will there be any left over? If there is cake left over, what fraction is left? 2. Color the Cars – Sam works in a car factory. His job is to paint all the cars after they’ve been built. To keep his job exciting, he paints the cars different colors every day. Using the sets of cars, show how Sam may have painted the cars on 4 different days. · You must color each set of cars using 3 or more colors (one color per car). · No two sets of cars can be the same.
