About this resource
What's inside this resource
I made this apostrophes puzzle set for my 3rd and 4th graders during our writing unit. The kids kept putting apostrophes in plurals like "apple's" and forgetting them in contractions like "dont." So I put together a word search, a word scramble, and a crossword using words like apostrophe, contraction, possessive, belong, ownership, don't, can't, won't, isn't, it's, girl's, boys', children's, letter, missing, and plurals. Nothing fancy — just puzzles to help the two main apostrophe uses finally stick.
The PDF is four pages. Three puzzles plus one answer key page. The word search works well for quiet time after recess. The scramble gets them talking because they argue about the difference between "it's" and "its." The crossword I use for partners. I added a couple simple apostrophe and arrow pointing to missing letters but nothing too busy.
Works for 3rd through 5th grade. Print and go. Sometimes I have early finishers write a contraction and a possessive using an apostrophe on the back. The kids actually ask for these now.
