Architecture Around the World word search, scramble and crossword puzzle
I made this architecture around the world vocabulary puzzle set for my 3rd and 4th graders during our global studies and art unit. The kids could name a few famous buildings like the Eiffel Tower and the Pyramids, but they had no idea what words like pagoda, mosque, or igloo meant when we explored the many ways people build homes and structures around the world. So I put together a word search, a word scramble, and a crossword using words like pagoda, mosque, igloo, hut, yurt, adobe, castle, temple, tower, and skyscraper. Nothing fancy — just puzzles to help the global architecture vocabulary finally stick.
The PDF is four pages. Three puzzles plus one answer key page. The word search works well for quiet time after recess or independent practice. The scramble gets them talking because they argue about whether a yurt is a home or a tent (it's a home—a portable round tent used by nomads in Central Asia). The crossword I use for partners or as a review after we've looked at pictures of different types of buildings around the world. I added a couple simple pagoda, igloo, and castle drawings but nothing too busy.
Works for 3rd through 5th grade. Print and go. Sometimes I have early finishers pick one type of building from the puzzles and draw it on the back. The kids actually ask for these now.
