Jewish Culture and Traditions word search, scramble and crossword puzzle
I made this Jewish culture and traditions puzzle set for my 3rd and 4th graders during our world cultures unit. The kids had some exposure to holidays like Hanukkah and Passover, but words like Shabbat, kosher, or mensch felt brand new to them . They kept asking, "What does mazel tov mean?" or "Why do they eat matzah?" So I put together a word search, a word scramble, and a crossword using words like Shabbat, challah, menorah, dreidel, Torah, synagogue, rabbi, kosher, matzah, seder, and bar/bat mitzvah. I also made sure to include everyday terms like mensch (a person of integrity) and tzedakah (charity) because they come up so often in conversations about what it means to be a good person in the community .
The PDF is four pages. Three puzzles plus one answer key page. The word search works well for quiet time after recess or independent practice. The scramble gets them talking because they argue about how to spell "synagogue" or whether "kosher" just means clean or something more specific. The crossword I use for partners or as a review after we've watched a short video about Shabbat traditions or looked at pictures of a seder plate. I added a couple simple star of David, challah, and Torah scroll drawings but nothing too busy.
Works for 3rd through 5th grade. Print and go. Sometimes I have early finishers pick one word from the puzzles and draw a picture or write a sentence about what it means on the back. The kids actually ask for these now.
