Student Government Vocabulary word search, scramble and crossword puzzle
I made this student government vocabulary puzzle set for my 4th graders during our class elections unit. The kids were excited to run for office, but they had no idea what words like candidate, election, or campaign meant when we talked about the process of choosing student leaders. They kept asking questions like "What's a platform?" or "Do I need to give a speech?" So I put together a word search, a word scramble, and a crossword using words like student government, election, candidate, vote, ballot, campaign, speech, platform, president, vice president, secretary, and treasurer . I also made sure to include a few like "debate" and "campaign poster" because they kept coming up in our class discussions .
The PDF is four pages. Three puzzles plus one answer key page. The word search works well for quiet time after recess, and the scramble gets them talking because they argue about the spelling of "treasurer" or whether a candidate needs a platform to run (they do, and the kids always have opinions about what they'd promise) . The crossword I use for partners or as a review after we've held a mock election in class. I added a couple simple ballot box, podium, and voting booth drawings but nothing too busy.
Works for 4th through 6th grade. Print and go. Sometimes I have early finishers write one thing they would put in their campaign platform on the back. The kids actually ask for these now.
