Teaching tips & learning objectives

Learning objectives

  • Interpret a visual rebus clue to identify the common English idiom or expression it represents

  • Recognize and recall the meaning of common English idioms and expressions

Teaching tips

  • Assign one puzzle sheet at a time (Hidden Meaning 4, 5, or 6), since each is a complete, self-contained set of 16

  • Have students work in pairs or small groups on unfamiliar idioms before revealing the answer key, since some expressions (e.g., "cutting corners," "walking on thin ice") are less common in everyday student speech

  • Use the answer key sheets to build a running class list of idioms as each new puzzle sheet is completed

Skills covered

  • Visual inference — students interpret a picture-based rebus clue to arrive at a word or phrase.

  • Idiom recognition — students match a visual representation to its corresponding common English idiom or expression.

  • Figurative language comprehension — students connect a literal picture clue to its non-literal, idiomatic meaning.
