Checks and Balances word search, scramble and crossword puzzle

I made this checks and balances puzzle set for my 4th graders during our government unit. The kids knew the three branches but had no idea how they keep each other from getting too much power. So I put together a word search, a word scramble, and a crossword using words like check, balance, power, veto, override, confirm, impeach, judicial review, unconstitutional, separation of powers, branch, president, Congress, Supreme Court, and limit. Nothing fancy — just puzzles to help the concept finally click.

The PDF is four pages. Three puzzles plus one answer key page. The word search works well for quiet time after recess. The scramble gets them talking because they argue about whether the president can make laws on his own. The crossword I use for partners. I added a couple simple scale and arrow drawings showing powers balancing but nothing too busy.

Works for 4th through 5th grade. Print and go. Sometimes I have early finishers give one example of a check the president has on Congress on the back. The kids actually ask for these now.
