Elements of Art word search, scramble and crossword puzzle
I made this elements of art puzzle set for my 3rd and 4th graders during our art unit. The kids could draw and paint but had no idea what words like line, shape, form, or texture meant when I asked them to describe their work. So I put together a word search, a word scramble, and a crossword using words like line, shape, form, color, value, texture, space, balance, contrast, emphasis, movement, pattern, rhythm, and unity . Nothing fancy — just puzzles to help the art vocabulary finally stick.
The PDF is four pages. Three puzzles plus one answer key page. The word search works well for quiet time after art class or indoor recess. The scramble gets them talking because they argue about whether texture is how something looks or how it feels . The crossword I use for partners to review before a quiz. I added a couple simple paintbrush and color wheel drawings but nothing too busy .
Works for 3rd through 5th grade. Print and go. Sometimes I have early finishers pick one element of art and draw an example on the back. The kids actually ask for these now.
