A sunflower never walks to the kitchen for a snack, and this free plant reading passage starts there to show how plants make their own food. Over two pages, students learn what roots, stems, leaves, flowers and seeds each do, from anchoring the plant and carrying water through tiny tubes to photosynthesis and pollen. A labeled plant diagram, an "Inside a Leaf's Kitchen" panel and a card that follows one drop of water from the soil to a leaf support the text, which closes on how waxy leaves, spines and a cactus's thick stem help desert plants survive.
Four question pages build on the reading. Students answer six multiple-choice questions and copy a supporting sentence, match five "job ads" to the right plant part with proof from the passage, and design a desert plant. In Plant Doctor they name the hurt part on four plants in trouble and give advice, then finish with six vocabulary clue cards and a sentence of their own.
