About this resource

What's inside this resource

Kit becomes kite when a silent e joins the end, and that one change is where these five i_e phonics worksheets begin. A short model on page 1 shows the i_e pattern, then children read short and long i pairs such as pin and pine, check the two i_e words in a row of four, and add e to rip and bit to make new words.

The middle pages connect reading to meaning and spelling. Children name four pictures with a helper and check the matching word, answer two riddles with bike or kite, sort short i and long i words, spell four dictated words, and follow a word chain from bike to two new words. Page 4 holds a short story, Mike's Ride, for underlining i_e words, answering two questions and drawing what is in the pine tree. The last student page uses fresh words for reading, spelling, two sentences and fixing a word that is missing its e.

  • Grade 1 and ready kindergarten: long i with the i_e (silent e) pattern
  • Seven pages: five student worksheets with 16 activities and a two-page answer guide with dictation scripts
  • Print options: a full-color PDF and a print-friendly black and white PDF

Teaching tips & learning objectives

Learning objectives

  • Read one-syllable words that use i_e to spell the long i sound.

  • Tell short i words from long i words by sound and spelling.

  • Add a silent e to change a short i word into a long i word.

Teaching tips

  • Read the directions aloud and model kit to kite before page 1, as the answer guide suggests.

  • Preview the picture names bike, kite, nine and pine before activity 4 so children decode the words rather than guess from the art.

  • Use the dictation sentences on page 6 for activity 7 and on page 7 for activity 14, and keep those pages out of the child's view.

Skills covered

  • Decoding long i: children read i_e words such as time, line and pine and compare them with short i words like pin and rid.

  • Spelling with silent e: children add e to rip and bit and spell dictated words such as ride and five.

  • Word building: a chain that starts with bike asks children to change one letter at a time and read each new word.
