About this resource
What's inside this resource
I made this nuclear energy puzzle set for my 4th graders during our energy unit. The kids had heard the term but thought it was just about bombs or power plants and had no idea it comes from splitting atoms. So I put together a word search, a word scramble, and a crossword using words like nuclear, atom, nucleus, fission, fusion, energy, uranium, chain reaction, power plant, radiation, reactor, core, heat, electricity, and turbine. Nothing fancy — just puzzles to help the vocabulary make sense without being scary.
The PDF is four pages. Three puzzles plus one answer key page. The word search works well for quiet time after recess. The scramble gets them talking because they argue about the difference between fission and fusion. The crossword I use for partners. I added a couple simple atom split drawings but nothing too busy.
Works for 4th through 5th grade. Print and go. Sometimes I have early finishers write one fact about nuclear energy on the back. The kids actually ask for these now.
