About This Product

One bank, ready for the platforms in the table below. One purchase gives you this Preterite vs. Imperfect Mastery Bank in every format in the table, so you stop rebuilding the same quiz for each platform.

Grades 6-12.

Listening: 8 of the 40 questions are listening items, carried by three narrated audio files inside the download (each passage read twice, in two voices). The printable and LMS versions name the audio file for each listening block, and the transcripts are printed in the Teacher Guide for the teacher only.

Some platforms limit import or assignment features by account plan, so check yours before purchase.

ABOUT THIS BANK

This mastery bank isolates the hardest call in Spanish 2: preterite or imperfect. All 40 items sit in meaningful past-time contexts where the student decides how the speaker presents the event, not just which ending a verb takes. The written set mixes completed sequences, background description, weather and states, habits with and without signal words, interruptions, simultaneous actions, the meaning-change verbs conocer, saber, and querer, and a four-blank paragraph cloze. Eight listening items across three narrated scripts (a childhood memory, a yesterday narration, and a two-speaker dialogue about last weekend) test the same contrast by ear. Every question carries a full explanation, why the key works, why each distractor fails, and why the other tense does not fit the context, so the key doubles as a reteaching sheet. Use it as a unit test, a midterm or final review section, or a diagnostic before the past-tense unit.

Every question carries a one sentence explanation, printed in the answer key and carried into the formats that show feedback, so a miss teaches something on the spot. The question content was panel audited before release for factual accuracy, answer key integrity, and answer pattern quality.

Skills practiced: completed and bounded events and sequences of events (questions 1, 5, 9, 14, 30); background description, weather, and states in the past (3, 6, 8, 11, 13); habitual past actions (2, 10, 31); ongoing actions interrupted by completed events (4, 7, 15, 16, 17, 18, 20); two actions in progress at the same time (19); sudden events against a described background (28); living situations and mental states (29, 32); meaning-change verbs conocer, saber, and querer in context (21, 22, 23); a four-blank paragraph cloze mixing background and events (24 to 27); and listening for background versus event across three narrated scripts (33 to 40).

THE SPANISH IN THIS BANK

The written items draw on high-frequency regular and irregular preterite and imperfect forms, including ser, ir, tener, estar, hacer, ver, and stem-changing -ir verbs such as pedir and dormir. About a third of the written items carry no signal word, so the decision rests on context alone. All Spanish is universal; no regional forms are keyed and no vosotros forms appear.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Do I need to type the questions in? No. Every format in this download is ready to import or print as it stands. The Google Forms version prints every question with its key, points, and feedback so you can build or check your form line by line.

How do I use this in Google Classroom if Classroom takes no QTI? Use the Google Forms version: build or copy the form, then attach it to a Classroom assignment. The Teacher Guide, Section 5, walks through copying, assigning, closing the form on schedule, and reading results.

What if my platform is not in the table? Start with the QTI file: it is the standard question format that most learning management systems import. One exception worth knowing: Moodle does not take QTI, which is why this download carries a separate Moodle XML file. And the printable PDF works everywhere paper does.

Can I split the bank into shorter quizzes? Yes. The QTI and Moodle files import as one bank, and every platform here lets you build shorter quizzes from selected questions after import.

ACTFL connection: This resource is aligned with the ACTFL World-Readiness Standards for Learning Languages (Communication, Cultures, Connections, Comparisons, Communities) and the Novice High to Intermediate Low Can-Do statements for Interpretive Communication. Students interpret narrated and written past-time Spanish and show they can tell completed events from background description, habits, and interrupted actions in context.
