ABOUT THIS BANK
This Spanish 1 Midterm Exam Bank gives you a complete, ready to grade first-semester midterm: 60 questions in import-ready formats, plus something the banks do not carry: a real listening section. Five short passages were written for Novice Mid ears and recorded with two voices, each passage read twice inside its audio file: a first-day conversation, a classroom announcement, a schedule notice, a family description, and a weather chat. The written section walks the first semester in course order, from greetings to the first honest ser versus estar contrast (listo, ready versus clever, question 58), and closes with two culture questions. Use it as the midterm itself, as an end-of-semester review, or as a placement check for students entering Spanish 2.
Every question carries a one sentence explanation, printed in the answer key and carried into the formats that show feedback, so a miss teaches something on the spot.
Skills practiced: listening comprehension over five recorded passages, each read twice (questions 1 to 12); greetings and introductions (13 to 15); classroom objects and hay (16 to 18); numbers (19, 20); days, months, and dates (21 to 23); telling time with cuarto, media, and en punto (24 to 26); weather expressions (27, 28); family members, relationships, and possessives (29 to 32); describing people with ser (33 to 36); origin with ser de (37 to 39); the regular present tense of -ar, -er, and -ir verbs (40 to 44); tener for age, hunger, and schedules (45 to 47); ir and the near future (48 to 50); gustar and encantar (51 to 53); school subjects and reading schedules (54 to 56); location with estar and the head-to-head ser versus estar contrast on listo (57, 58); and culture: Spanish-speaking countries and the two-last-name custom (59, 60).
WHAT IT TESTS, specifically:
Listening (12 questions, 5 recorded passages): greetings and introductions; classroom announcements with numbers; schedules with days and times; family descriptions; weather and likes.
Grammar: ser (descriptions, origin, professions, material) and a first contrast of ser vs. estar (location; listo, ready vs. clever); regular present tense of -ar, -er and -ir verbs; tener for age, hunger and schedules; ir for movement and the near future (ir a + infinitive); gustar and encantar with singular and plural nouns and infinitives; hay for existence; possessive adjectives (mi, mis, tu, su).
Vocabulary: greetings and classroom language; school objects; numbers to 100; days, months and dates; telling time including cuarto, media and en punto; weather expressions; family members and relationships; school subjects and schedules.
Culture (2 questions): which countries are Spanish-speaking, and the two-last-name custom in the Spanish-speaking world.
THE SPANISH IN THIS BANK
Stems are complete Spanish sentences or short exchanges, with first-use glosses only where a first-semester student cannot reasonably infer a word (question, is written, tomorrow, date, grandparents, hunger, schedule, Spanish-speaking, last names, and the verb glosses on the present-tense items). The listening passages use tú forms only, universal Spanish, and high-frequency vocabulary; every distractor in the listening section is a fact stated in the same passage, so the section tests listening, not guessing.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Do I need to type the questions in? No. Every format in this download is ready to import or print as it stands. The Google Forms version prints every question with its key, points, and feedback so you can build or check your form line by line.
How do I use this in Google Classroom if Classroom takes no QTI? Use the Google Forms version: build or copy the form, then attach it to a Classroom assignment. The Teacher Guide, Section 5, walks through copying, assigning, closing the form on schedule, and reading results.
What if my platform is not in the table? Start with the QTI file: it is the standard question format that most learning management systems import. One exception worth knowing: Moodle does not take QTI, which is why this download carries a separate Moodle XML file.
Can I split the bank into shorter quizzes? Yes. The QTI and Moodle files import as one bank, and every platform here lets you build shorter quizzes from selected questions after import.
ACTFL connection: This resource is aligned with the ACTFL World-Readiness Standards for Learning Languages (Communication, Cultures, Connections, Comparisons, Communities) and the Novice Mid Can-Do statements for Interpersonal, Interpretive, and Presentational Communication. Students demonstrate first-semester Spanish 1 proficiency by interpreting spoken and written Spanish and selecting accurate, culturally appropriate responses across greetings, school life, family, weather, and daily schedules.
