Rivers and Lakes word search, scramble and crossword puzzle
I made this rivers and lakes puzzle set for my 2nd and 3rd graders during our landforms and water unit. The kids knew water flowed but couldn't explain words like source, mouth, or tributary. So I put together a word search, a word scramble, and a crossword using words like river, lake, stream, source, mouth, tributary, sediment, delta, basin, freshwater, pond, current, meander, and erosion. Nothing fancy — just puzzles to help the vocabulary click.
The PDF is four pages. Three puzzles plus one answer key page. The word search works well for quiet time after recess. The scramble gets them talking because they argue about where a river starts and ends. The crossword I use for partners. I added a couple simple wavy river and lake drawings but nothing too busy.
Works for 1st through 4th grade. Print and go. Sometimes I have early finishers draw a river from source to mouth on the back and label both ends. The kids actually ask for these now.
