About this resource

What's inside this resource

Are your students learning to read short vowel words? Do your students need picture supports when blending sounds to read words? This set with 24 Short u Word Cards with Pictures is just what your students need. Most words are cvc words.

Includes 3 fill in the blank worksheets with and without work banks. Words needed to fill in the blanks are the words on the word cards. Worksheets without the word banks offer students a more difficult challenge. Worksheets provide extra practice for learners to use the words in context. Use the worksheets with the work cards or separately for morning work or homework. Also works well in a literacy center.

These cards are perfect for building vocabulary with bright, bold, fun clip art. My English learners love these cards.

Word Cards may be printed in color or in black/white.

There are 6 cards per page. Print 4 pages for all 24 cards.

Includes the following words – cub, sub, tub, cut, hut, nut, gum, sum, bun, run, sun, bus, bug, hug, jug, mug, rug, dug, cup, pup, nun, tux, mud, up.

These cards are versatile. Look at all the ways you can use them-

✅Blend sounds to read words with picture supports.

✅Build vocabulary.

✅Work on rhyming words both phonemically and phonically (similarly spelled words).

✅Change a beginning letter (hug, mug, rug) or ending letter (bun, bus, bug) to make a new word.

✅Sort by beginning sounds.

✅Sort by ending sounds.

Teaching tips & learning objectives

Learning objectives

  • Decode one-syllable words containing a medial short-u sound

  • Connect each printed word with a supporting picture

  • Choose vocabulary that fits the meaning and grammar of a sentence

  • Recall short-u words independently after using the card set

Teaching tips

  • Divide the cards into four six-word groups so blending practice remains focused before all twenty-four words are mixed.

  • Ask learners to justify a worksheet choice using the surrounding sentence meaning, not only the first or last letter.

  • Move from color cards to blackline cards when the image should remain supportive but less visually prominent.

Skills covered

  • Short-vowel decoding — consonants are blended with the medial short-u sound across varied CVC words.

  • Semantic mapping — pictures link each decoded form with a concrete meaning.

  • Sentence completion — vocabulary is selected according to contextual fit.

  • Independent recall — no-bank versions require learners to retrieve a target word without printed options.
