Write a four-digit number in expanded form, turning "5 thousands + 3 hundreds + 2 tens + 6 ones" into 5,000 + 300 + 20 + 6
Recombine the expanded parts into a standard numeral such as 5,326, 7,458 or 8,642
Place a zero correctly in any position, producing 990 from 0 thousands, 4,011 from 0 hundreds and 2,703 from 0 tens
Teaching tips
Choose the color or black-and-white student copies; both versions use the same questions.
For every star calculation, start again from the large number at the beginning of the row.
Check that students understand place value through thousands before assigning the activities.
Skills covered
Expanded form to the thousands — students turn "7 thousands + 4 hundreds + 5 tens + 8 ones" into 7,000 + 400 + 50 + 8 and then into 7,458.
Mental addition by place — from 5,763 and 7,352 students add 1,000, 100, 10 and 1 in their heads, writing each of the four results in its own star.
Mental subtraction by place — from 2,148 and 4,485 the same four steps run downwards, giving results such as 1,148, 2,048 and 4,475.

Questions teachers ask about this resource
Are the star calculations successive steps?
No. Apply each printed operation separately to the large starting number. For 5,763, adding 1,000 gives 6,763, while adding 100 to the original 5,763 gives 5,863.
Do the color and black-and-white copies have different questions?
No. They use the same place-value questions and star calculations, so teachers can choose either printing version.
