The Oregon Trail word search, scramble and crossword puzzle

The Oregon Trail word search, scramble and crossword puzzle
I made this Oregon Trail puzzle set for my 3rd and 4th graders during our westward expansion unit. The kids had played the old computer game but had no idea what the trail was or why so many families made the dangerous journey. So I put together a word search, a word scramble, and a crossword using words like Oregon Trail, pioneer, wagon, oxen, Missouri, Oregon, journey, supply, fort, river, mountain, disease, hardship, Independence Rock, and destination. Nothing fancy — just puzzles to help the real story finally stick.
The PDF is four pages. Three puzzles plus one answer key page. The word search works well for quiet time after recess. The scramble gets them talking because they argue about how long the trail actually took to travel. The crossword I use for partners. I added a couple simple covered wagon and trail marker drawings but nothing too busy.
Works for 3rd through 5th grade. Print and go. Sometimes I have early finishers list two items pioneers would pack for the journey on the back. The kids actually ask for these now.
