I made this tree puzzle set for my third graders during our plant unit. Fifteen tree names recur in a word search, scramble and crossword, including oak, maple, pine, fir, spruce, cedar, birch, willow, ash, elm, beech, hickory, walnut, chestnut and redwood.
The download contains three two-page PDFs, each with a student puzzle followed by its completed key. The word search works for quiet practice; try the crossword with partners and use its identifying clues for discussion.
For an extension, ask early finishers to pick a tree and draw its leaf on the back.
