Personal STEM Research Project: Each student chooses a topic of interest and answers a challenging math question about it after step-by-step mini lessons teach them how. This research project can be used in many ways: - As a whole class STEM unit with 7 mini-lessons (a great idea for Friday afternoons) - As a year/term-long project for early finishers (no more copying extra math worksheets for every single lesson!) - As an enrichment activity for a small group (for those students who are ready for an extra challenge) The unit takes students through the step-by-step process using an example (how much water is needed to fill an ice rink for the NHL). The 7 steps are: o Topic: Help your students choose a topic and then narrow it down. This way your students will be invested in this project because it is about something that interests them! o Question: Brainstorm questions about that topic that need math to be solved. Help guided your students to a question that will have more than one step to solve. o Skills: Practice/learn skills needed to answer the question. Your students can use math websites like IXL, youtube videos, or their textbook to learn/review skills. o Research: Complete research to find necessary information. Students will need to find science and technology information to answer many of their questions. o Math: Put the skills and research together to find the answer! o Present: Think of a creative way to present the solution to the class. o Reflect: Take time to think back on the process. Grades: This project works well for intermediate/middle school aged students in grades 5-8. It could also be used in a high school special education classroom with extra support.

Extreme Environments: Integrated Middle School Science and ELA Debate Activity This assignment is a great way to integrate earth science learning and the English language arts skills of speaking and listening. Students think of relevant reasons for and against humans exploring extreme environments such as the desert, space, and the deep ocean. How to Use: You can split your class into “for” and “against” before they brainstorm and research or afterwards (depending on if you want them to gather information for both sides or not). Then, you can have an informal class debate/discussion with students from each side presenting ideas and rebuttals. Finally, students sum up their personal thoughts in a paragraph. Will they side with what they presented, or will they be swayed by the other side's points? Student Instructions: Extreme environments like the deep ocean, space, volcanoes, and the arctic are full of wonderful sights and discoveries. However, there are downsides to allowing humans to explore these locations. Brainstorm and research reasons for and against allowing human exploration in extreme environments. Grades to Use With: This lesson is designed for students in the middle grades (5-8) who are studying extreme environments or space in earth science or science class. Spring Two Step Equation Maze March Activity

This spring-themed maze is one of those activities students actually enjoy while practicing two-step equations. Instead of just solving problems on a worksheet, they move through a path by finding the correct answers, which keeps them focused much longer than usual. I created this to give middle school students extra practice with solving linear equations without it feeling repetitive. They’ll work with addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division as they go from one step to the next. The setup is simple. Students solve an equation, look for their answer, and follow the maze to the next problem. If they make a mistake, they usually notice it quickly because they end up stuck, which helps them self-correct. It works well for grades 6–9, especially for review lessons, early finishers, or even as a quick activity before a test. I’ve also used it in small groups and turned it into a timed challenge, which students tend to like. There are two versions included, so you can choose an easier or slightly more challenging option depending on your class. This makes it easier to use with mixed ability levels. Answer keys are included with the full solutions, so students can check their work or you can go over it together. The file is a printable PDF (9 pages), ready to use with no prep.
