How Do Astronauts Meet Their Needs in Outer Space? (Middle School Extreme Environment Research)

This middle school science lesson introduces the essential needs that humans (astronauts) must meet in order to survive while exploring in the extreme environment of outer space: •Oxygen •Water •Food •Waste Removal •Temperature •Light •Pressure How to Use: One need (oxygen) is comprehensively explained as an example to show your students. You can assign the other six needs as you see fit: Students can research one or two individually or in small groups and share the information with the class (a jigsaw activity), or they can complete the whole assignment independently. This is also a great way to help your students practice using focused search terms on the internet. You can do a quick mini-lesson on an interactive whiteboard, showing them how you would search for one of the items before letting them use technology to do research themselves. Student Instructions: Humans have several needs that must be met to survive in any extreme environment on Earth or in space. We need to have oxygen to breathe, water to drink, food to eat, a way to store or remove waste, a certain temperature to keep our body safe, some light (but protection from too much direct sunlight), and the correct pressure so our organs don’t collapse or explode. We use different kinds of technology to meet all of these needs in space. You will research how humans survive in space. Find specific answers, draw diagrams , and be ready to share what you have learned with your classmates. The first need is completed for you below. Grades to Use With: This lesson is designed for middle school students in grades 6-9 who are studying extreme environments and/or space exploration in science or earth science class. What You Get: This is aPercentages of Amounts Pennant Activity.It is a 19-page printable that includes pennants printed 2 per page. There are 32 flags with percent problems. There are 2 blank flags at the end for students to create their own questions. They can swap and solve each others. This is also an opportunity to give students more scaffolded questions or challenging depending on ability. An answer key is included. How To Implement This Pennant Activity: You can print off all the flags. Depending on your class, you’ll want to decide how many flags you want each student to complete. If you have a small class size, you may have students complete 3 or more flags each. Give students time to find the percentages and write their answers. There is enough space on the flags for students to work out the problem. Students can cut out their pennants and you can display them in the classroom or in the hallway. Without a doubt, history is a topic that can be easily overlooked by our students. Sometimes, it can be difficult for them to make connections with the past in a way that makes sense to them. Being able to provide students with meaningful resources is the best way to get over this learning curve. Whenever you have a social studies topic to introduce or review, you want to find engaging products that you know your students will be able to learn from. Within my store, you will find a plethora of social studies resources to utilize with your students. What You Get: This is an Artic Survival Team Building Activity. There are 13 slides in the presentation . There is a Survival Score Sheet as well as an Answer Key + Teacher Guide. All 3 products are editable and can be accessed digitally. How To Implement This Resource: This is a team building activity that will have students ponder what kind of process makes for “good decision making.” Students will begin by being presented with the following scenario: “Your plane has crash landed in Northern Canada at night. The crash has killed the pilot and co-pilot. You and the others have discovered 12 items in the wreckage. You will be asked to rank the importance of these 12 items to your survival. Then, your group and you will rank them together.” As the teacher, you can decide on how large or small you want the groups to be. When all students have finished their individual ranking, allow them to come together with their group and propose new rankings. This will require students to talk to one another and listen to other reasonings. When students have finished their group rankings, they will have the opportunity to reflect with 4 questions. Students may find that humans make better decisions when they are able to consider diverse experiences. The Answer Key provides a ranking and rationale that was composed by former instructor in survival training. Students will be able to use this answer key to notate the Expert Score on their Survival Score Sheet. I hope you enjoy!

STEM Project: Climate Change Solutions with Assessment Rubric is designed for middle school students from Grades 6 to 9.
