The Pilgrims and the Plymouth Settlement, Readers Theater
Social Studies, History, History: USA, Grade 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, Activities
Here is a play to help deliver any lesson about the Pilgrims and their settlement in the Plymouth colony. I have enjoyed using this as a resource in my classroom for years.. Here is what is included in the play. It explains why the Pilgrims were in Holland, why they came to North America, events on board ship, and what happened after they arrived. Students like to be active in the classroom. This is an activity to get them up and moving! There are a number of roles for students. The voyage on the Mayflower seems fascinating to us but in reality it had to be very scary and very boring! However, there were some interesting events to take place on the voyage over. The play does identify why the people we call "Pilgrims" today were in Holland and why they felt the need to leave. Most of the major events on the voyage are covered in the play and even some of what the Pilgrims experienced in what we now call the state of Massachusetts. This works well as an engaging acivity for students. Overall, this takes about 15-20 minutes to complete and your students will love it! If you enjoy including activities like this in your lessons, there are more plays and skits I've created that will be on this TeachSimple website. Have fun! :-)

Sheltered language strategies are teaching strategies that focus on teaching academic vocabulary at the same time as academic content. These types of strategies have been researched and shown to improve student learning, especially for ELLs. This Vocab Grab Bag game combines both academic vocabulary building and student interaction. When students participate in this activity, they are explicitly required to interact with both academic language and content at the same time. This Vocab Grab Bag resource contains -Vocabulary Cards; you will need one set of cards per group. -”How to play vocab grab bag” text Instructions to project -Cheat Sheet: Words and definitions -Job cards for groups of 3, 4, or 5; you will need one set of job cards per group -(Optional) Alphabetizing Mat; if you use this additional activity, print one mat per group. -Answer Key for Alphabetizing Mat You will need to supply your own bag, envelope, or container for the word cards. How to play Vocab Grab Bag 1.Cut out the vocab cards and place one set of cards in each bag, envelope or container that you are using. 2.Organize students into groups of 3, 4, or 5. I have found that groups of 4 seem to be optimal. 3.Give each student one Job Card. 4.Students go in order, starting with Job 1 until they have completed one round. Do not return the used words to the container. 5. After each round, students rotate jobs, passing the Job Cards in the order you designate. 6. Continue until the teacher stops the game . 7. Alternate option #1: When all word cards have been used, transition to putting the words in alphabetical order, using the Alphabetizing Mat. 8. Alternate option #2: If all word cards have been used, return all the cards to the container and start over again. Teacher tips •Do not skip the praise step, it is important and surprisingly fun! •If you have a student in the very early stages of learning English, consider letting them keep Job 1 or Job 2 for the entire game . •Project the instructions at the front of the room for students to refer to while playing.

Zombie Government Simulation
Social Studies, Government, Grade 9, 10, 11, Activities, Projects
Zombie Government Teacher Simulation Guide Thanks for your support in getting this product! I worked hard to make it a flexible and fun adaptation of the activity I made for my classroom. Don’t hesitate to adapt the activity to best mesh with your classroom. The purpose of this activity is to demonstrate to students how difficult group decision making is, how tricky insurgent groups can be, and how community needs like food, water, education, and entertainment can quickly be neglected when safety concerns are major factors. Each day students will be in their small groups making decisions about their government. You, as the facilitator, act as a kind of game manager. Some groups will find making decisions very easy, others will struggle with basics such as who is in charge? As a general rule of thumb, I make announcements mid-class every day, like a newspaper of the simulation. I can use this opportunity to individualize the conditions within the various groups, or to make things harder on groups that are finding the task easy. See the following page for ideas I’ve used in the past. Here are some general ideas on “events” that could spring up in each QZ: -- Imposter! One of the group members is known to be working with the Fireflies, but it is unclear who (approach a student before class to let them know) -- Food crisis! Rations are short, and it is unclear how to feed the population -- Road blocks! The Fireflies have blocked roads in order to combat the curfew. Now trucks, tanks, and vehicles cannot move throughout the city -- Tainted water! The diseased fungus has entered the water supply! How will the group let their residents know, and provide a solution? -- Assassination! The group leader has been taken out by the Fireflies. How will the group respond? -- An Olive Branch! The Fireflies have proposed a peace treaty, so long as they can have an equal say in all government decisions. If the group has a leader, they will now have 1 Government leader, and 1 Firefly leader. If they have a 5 person council, they will now have a 10 person council (half Fireflies), etc. -- And anything else you can think of! The more creativity the more the game sticks with students. I sincerely hope the simulation is as fun for your students as it typically is for mine.
