This is a How a Bill Becomes a Law Hexagon Project. This social studies project was designed for 8th – 12th grade students. Learning Intention: To explore the process of lawmaking by following a bill from being an idea to becoming a law. Task: You will be creating a hexagon foldable that explains the legislative process of lawmaking in a way that is easy to understand through the use of pictures and simple text. Directions: -Create a hexagon foldable that describes the legislative process of lawmaking. -Each flap must have the step number on the front with a picture (NO WORDS) and the description of the step on the inside of the flap. -The exposed middle area of the hexagon must have the title of the project ex: “How a Bill Becomes a Law.” -Text must be typed or NEATLY handwritten. Student hexagons must include: - The president’s role - The Senate’s role - The House of Representatives’ role - Role of committees - Role of a congressperson - Role of a citizen There is a Hexagon Project Rubric included. The rubric will score: -Description and content -Images -Organization and conventions You will print a blank hexagon template (included) for students to complete this task. When you have covered the topic of the legislative process of lawmaking with your students, this will be a purposeful project to have students engage in. Students can discuss each component that is a part of this process prior to beginning their individual project. Unions, strikes, negotiations, and the like can cause big ripples in communities across the country. This engaging case study places students at the heart of a contentious union negotiation-- with the threat of a garbage collectors strike right around the corner! The simulation takes place in the city of Cleantopia. The Waste Pros Union, representing the city's garbage collectors, are entering negotiations with the City Sanitation Department for a new contract. The current fleet of garbage trucks is aging, and many lack functioning air conditioning, leading to safety concerns and worker discomfort, as well. At the forefront of the negotiations is pay, though. Since their last contract, inflation has risen dramatically. As a result, workers feel very underpaid compared to their counterparts in other cities. In this activity , student groups (Union management, workers, and city sanitation department) will negotiate with each other and fight the clock for an agreeable contract. The groups will debate on the following fronts: Pay: Workers want a 15% raise; the city offers 3% Working Conditions: Workers demand modernized trucks with functioning air conditioning Overtime: Union wants time-and-a-half for overtime; city wants to maintain current flat rate Paternity Leave: Workers request 8 weeks of paid paternity leave; city currently offers 2 weeks What will they settle on? Will the union call for a strike? Will the city look to replace its workers? What will the public think? Questions like these and more will help learning come to life with this simulation. Sharecropping Activity – Post-Civil War US History

Sharecropping is an agricultural system that emerged after the American Civil War in the late 19th century. It was prevalent in the southern United States, particularly in the rural areas where the plantation system had previously dominated. Under sharecropping, landowners would allow farmers, typically former slaves or poor white farmers, to work their land in exchange for a share of the crops produced. The landowner would provide the necessary land, seeds, tools, and sometimes even housing for the sharecroppers. At the end of the harvest, the crops would be divided between the landowner and the sharecropper, with the sharecropper receiving a portion, usually around half, of the crop. Sharecropping was essentially a form of agricultural labor contract. However, it often led to a cycle of poverty and debt for sharecroppers. Since they did not own the land they cultivated, they had limited control over their own economic destiny. They often had to borrow money or supplies from the landowner, creating a system of indebtedness that was difficult to escape. Furthermore, the sharecroppers had little say in the choice of crops or the marketing of their harvest. Landowners would often dictate the type of crops to be grown, which were usually cash crops such as cotton or tobacco. The sharecroppers' lack of control over their economic circumstances and the volatile nature of agricultural markets made it challenging for them to break free from poverty. This historical simulation provides students with a deep understanding behind the system of sharecropping. The main idea behind this simulation is to show students how skewed the relationship between the sharecropper and landowner was after the Civil War. Students will gain an insight into the way sharecroppers paid for debts, and how many of them were forced to work in order to pay off those debts
