This Guided Reading Book - The Power of the Team (Level N) with lesson plan includes: Guided Reading Color Label (front cover x1) This is a quick way to match the book’s demands to what students can generally handle.. The overall goal is to use the level/color to pick books for several smaller groups. To qualify for a certain level, a student is expected to read a book from that level with about 90–94% accuracy. If a student is consistently accurate and understands, move up a level. If the student is struggling at that level, drop down and add more support. Each student will improve at completely different rates, but it is generally one of the best ways to check progress across the class. DOWNLOAD THE CATALOG TO VIEW ALL GUIDED READING BOOKS AVAILABLE (SORTED LEVELS A-Z) Pre-Reading Question (x1) Teacher asks the prompt aloud, can be while showing the cover or first page. Students share what they already know, or make educated guesses from the cover. Prompt them to use the target vocabulary. Write some of their responses on the board to look back at during the reading. Vocabulary Words (x5) Introduce the five words, best doing it one at a time. Start by saying it, while students repeat and then see if anyone knows what it means before reading further. Read through the meaning and try to briefly connect each word to a picture or gesture so it’s meaningful. Ask students to flip through the book pages and point to where they see each of the vocabulary words. While reading the book pause upon coming across one of the vocab words or read the sentence twice to make sure students understand the word has appeared. Optional: Ask students to raise hands whenever they see/hear one of the new words. Guided Reading Pages (x10) Check the book snapshot (below) for: primary topic - do you need to prep extra reading or intro materials on this? what is taught best - decide on 1-2 bullets to focus on, use the prompt or words provided here for best results. learning goals - what you are checking for students to be able to do after the session, elicit answers using prompts or words provided. key vocabulary (see section above). questions overview - so you know what is coming up and if you need to prep extra materials to assist understanding. Run the lesson You may have already looked at a few of the pages together, but you can show them some of the pictures again first to set meaning. Depending on how much time you have and how familiar your students are with guided reading class, you may want to read the book aloud first with the group first. Students whisper or partner read, while you listen in. If time, do it as a group, one student reading a page each. Use the guided page’s prompts to coach: “Check the picture / does it make sense?” “Point under the words / try the first sound” “Reread the sentence smoothly”. Try to focus more on one student per session (rotating every time), so you can work out if they are ready to move up or need to move down a level. Comprehension Questions (back cover x3) This is your way to check that students didn’t just say the words, but actually understood the text. First, let students answer by pointing to the page/picture and saying a short sentence. After any answer, follow with: “Show me where you found that in the text.” In bigger groups, have partners answer first (10–20 seconds), then call on 2–3 students to share. In this product, students will decide what is a big versus small problem and then click on either the adult picture or frog (representing Kelso's Choices). Reading ability is not required because I have done a voice-over for each card. There is a description of how big and small problems are defined and there is a list of the 9 Kelso's Choices in the small problem definition as strategies. Knowledge of Kelso's Choices is important as the frog represents these choices. There are 25 task cards in this deck and 2 informational cards. Estimating Crowd Sizes using Jacob's Method

This investigation focuses on estimating the size crowds or even large collections of objects using some very basic mathematics. Jacob's Method of counting large crowds involves creating a grid that divides a given area into equal size squares. An estimate is made by counting the number of people in a few squares, then multiply the average obtained by the number of squares in the grid. What would happen if you use different size grids ? How do the estimates compare between pupils ? Could you get a more accurate estimate if you took all the estimates in the class and calculated th average? These and many more questions are presented on the worksheet provided along with a number of pictures of multiple objects and crowds with & without prepared grids for printing or viewing on a computer screen. This activity encourages sharing and comparing of data, refining methods of collection of the data and discussion about the accuracy and limitations of the method used. The package includes: Teachers Guidance Notes An introduction into Jacob's Method and a guide to the Worksheets Estimation Worksheet A Worksheet for the students on how to use Jacob's Method and record the data. A list of questions for discussion. Estimation Crowds To be used as a starter with the student's Estimation Worksheet containing 2 crowds of different densities. Pupils begin by guessing the size of each crowd, then estimate with a 6 square grid & 24 square grid using Jacob's Method. Estimation Samples 1 and 2 14 pictures to choose from all of which have a fairly even distribution: crowds of people, tomatoes,stars, trees, bricks, flowers, balloons, birds and more. Pupils estimate with no grid, a 6 square grid & 24 square grid, and are encouraged to experiment further with other grid sizes of their own. Estimation Sample 3 7 more pictures to choose from, but this time the distribution of the populations are not so even or regular, so its more challenging and opens up more questions. They include a football crowd, bubbles, two other crowds, a shoal of fish and a herd of wildebeast. There is lots to practice with & an excellent topic for critical thinking without the need for advanced math and can be extended into investigating bias in crowd counting. Note: All the documents are printable. To view the sample populations with the grids on a computer you will need the Adobe Acrobat Reader on a PC or Mac. Common Core Links at 7th Grade CCSS7.SP.A.1 Understand that statistics can be used to gain information about a population by examining a sample of the population; generalizations about a population from a sample are valid only if the sample is representative of that population. Understand that random sampling tends to produce representative samples and support valid inferences. CCSS7.SP.A.2 Use data from a random sample to draw inferences about a population with an unknown characteristic of interest. Generate multiple samples (or simulated samples) of the same size to gauge the variation in estimates or predictions. For example, estimate the mean word length in a book by randomly sampling words from the book; predict the winner of a school election based on randomly sampled survey data. Gauge how far off the estimate or prediction might be.

Practice reading words with the prefix PRE- with these sentence reading rings. Students will read words with the prefix pre- in the context of sentences. Each card also includes a bold and colorful image to illustrate each sentence and to help students to learn the meanings of each word. What is Included: This resource includes one reading ring activity for the prefix pre. There are cards each featuring a different word with the prefix non, with a sentence using the word in context and an image to illustrate that sentence. When to Use Early Finishers - If students finish their work early, they can use these reading rings for extra practice. CVC Words Phonic Matching Game: I and E

Here is a simple game to help children learn to read CVC words with the medial sounds I and E. This game will help your child to learn to blend three-letter words with the short vowels ‘i’ and 'e'. That means, to put sounds together to make a word. The child has to be able to feel and hear the word that is being sounded out. This game is supplied in both colour and black and white - you choose how you print! We suggest laminating the pieces for durability. Who is the CVC Words Phonic Matching Game: I and E for? Those who are just beginning to sound out/blend CVC words with the I and E short vowel sounds. These may be: Young learners Special needs learners ESL/EFL learners of any age. Who can use the CVC Words Phonic Matching Game: I and E? Parents Homeschoolers/home educators Teachers in class, or for use in centers Those involved in intervention work Private tutors How can the CVC Words Phonic Matching Game: I and E be used? It can be played as a game for 2 players It can be used as a matching activity for individual pupils - great for centers! It can be used for assessment purposes The game pages can even be used as worksheets - you choose! To make the CVC Words Phonic Matching Game: I and E Simply print out the two baseboards. Print out the word cards and cut them up. Teach your pupil to take care of the cards and not bend them more than can be helped. To play the CVC Words Phonic Matching Game: I and E Take a baseboard each. Scatter the word cards face down. Take it in turns to take a word card. Read it. If it matches a picture on your baseboard, place it in the correct space. If not, return it to the pool of cards. Play continues until someone completes their board, or until all the cards are used up. Teaching tips: Demonstrate how to sound out a word when it is your turn and invite your pupil’s help when it is your turn, so s/he gets even more practice. Your pupil will need a lot of blending practice so be patient. If your pupil has difficulty sounding out these words then spend more time practicing blending before playing the game again.
