Speaking and Listening Would You Rather Set 3 is the first of 5 sets to engage your students in this game. Speaking and listening are important skills to practice with students. Many students have a hard time sharing their ideas out loud. Would You Rather questions are a great way to get all students involved. You could do just speaking and listening where you put the questions up and students share their answers. You could print out the questions and have students answer in groups. Or, you could have students write answers in complete sentences and then share. Would You Rather questions not only allow students to communicate with each other, it's a great opportunity for students to see who might have common interests. If students complete these in a group setting, there could be some great discussions that students have based on who has the same answers. If you choose to have students stand and give their answer in front of the class, you could have them just say their answer, or you could encourage them to give reasons why. Prior knowledge required: · current, voltage and resistance – defining and understanding, units, measuring; · circuits and symbols; · series and parallel circuits – current, voltage, switches, lamps; · current and voltage varying with number of batteries; · Ohms Law. Pupils have to work their way through the clues to find the code to a box with a combination lock containing an antidote to a substance, accidentally ingested by the laboratory. The substance is the departments a prototype, orally administered sunscreen being developed by the department which has unfortunately been found to turn the skin of mice purple and which has not yet been tested on humans and is also therefore potentially toxic. The pack contains: · PowerPoint – scene setting and instructions (sound effects and built-in timer); · crossword ; · word search; · dominoes activity; · worksheet Differentiated over 2 versions); · code breaker sheet; · answer keys; · lesson plan. If time is limited just the crossword , word search and domino can be used. With a minimum of 50 minutes available one of the differentiated worksheets can also be used. The worksheet is the most challenging clue to solve and this can be omitted completely for less able classes. Both 3 and 4 number combination locks can be purchased very cheaply online if using an actual box containing an unopened bottle of a soft drink, with the label removed, for a member of the winning team to take to the technician. Alternatively all the combination locks in the science department had been set to the same combination for an escape room lesson including the one used on the box with the antidote in the prep room. Science Coloring Pages: Common Frog Here is an original drawing of a Common Frog for young children to colour. The study of the natural world is the foundation for the later study of science. The colouring of pictures of natural things, be it plants or animals is more than a pastime activity. It is a means of familiarising young children with these everyday subjects. The colouring of this Common Frog picture can of course be used as a pastime, or even as part of a creative lesson - the picture looks super framed - but it has the potential to teach much more. The UK National Curriculum for Science expects children to be taught to use the local environment to study plants and animals, throughout the year. What better than to use familiar subjects, such as the Common Frog, which is a familiar subject in springtime, to teach much about the natural world? Colouring can help children to become familiar with the parts of the Common Frog: ask questions: What colour are the legs? Can you see the stripes? How many legs does the frog have? Colouring a picture of the Common Frog can also help children to become familiar with the particular characteristics of a frog - its shape, and special features, for example. It is best if children colour the Common Frog picture either following a sighting of a frog or from reference books - whenever their interest is aroused! Need a fun, engaging activity for practicing number bonds to 30 with your kiddos? This math bingo game is perfect for getting your students focused on number bonds for numbers 1-30! Preparation: Print and laminate enough Bingo Boards for each student to have one Optional: print, cut and laminate the Playing Squares Print, cut and laminate the Calling Cards. Lamination is optional, but recommended, as it will ensure that the game remains in good condition and can be used for many years to come! To avoid excessive printing and laminating, the Playing Squares could be replaced with other manipulatives such as buttons or counters. Alternatively, students could mark squares off on their Bingo Boards with dry erase markers and then simply clean the boards again after playing (provided that you have laminated the boards) How to Play: Each student needs a Bingo Board and at least 7 Playing Squares (or other manipulatives or a dry erase marker) Shuffle the Calling Cards and place them in a pile. Draw a Calling Card and call out and/or display the contents of the card. Each student looks on their Bingo Board for a block that matches the Calling Card. If they find one, they cover that block with a Playing Square. Draw a new Calling Card and repeat the process. The game continues until somebody wins. To win, a student must shout out “BINGO!” when they have covered three blocks in a row (horizontally, vertically or diagonally). If the Calling Cards run out before anybody wins, simply shuffle them again and continue playing. Please note: Sometimes there may be more than one block on the Bingo Board that matches the Calling Card. The student may only cover one block on a turn. Once that turn is over, the Playing Square may not be moved to cover a different block. This resource includes 5 different bingo board, in colour as well as black and white. This is a How a Bill Becomes a Law Hexagon Project. This social studies project was designed for 8th – 12th grade students. Learning Intention: To explore the process of lawmaking by following a bill from being an idea to becoming a law. Task: You will be creating a hexagon foldable that explains the legislative process of lawmaking in a way that is easy to understand through the use of pictures and simple text. Directions: -Create a hexagon foldable that describes the legislative process of lawmaking. -Each flap must have the step number on the front with a picture (NO WORDS) and the description of the step on the inside of the flap. -The exposed middle area of the hexagon must have the title of the project ex: “How a Bill Becomes a Law.” -Text must be typed or NEATLY handwritten. Student hexagons must include: - The president’s role - The Senate’s role - The House of Representatives’ role - Role of committees - Role of a congressperson - Role of a citizen There is a Hexagon Project Rubric included. The rubric will score: -Description and content -Images -Organization and conventions You will print a blank hexagon template (included) for students to complete this task. When you have covered the topic of the legislative process of lawmaking with your students, this will be a purposeful project to have students engage in. Students can discuss each component that is a part of this process prior to beginning their individual project. Allowing students to discuss in small groups will refresh their learning and solidify their thought processes.
