Class/Group Activity - Write Inequalities from Conceptual Problems

This is a group/class activity for students to practice writing multi-step in inequalities. There are 4 problems with 5 possible answers each. More than one inequality may be correct. Students will discuss their choices and then must be ready to defend their answers. This activity corresponds to the Common Core math standard: CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.7.EE.B.4.B Solve word problems leading to inequalities of the form px + q > r or px + q < r, where p, q, and r are specific rational numbers. Graph the solution set of the inequality and interpret it in the context of the problem. Teacher Directions Before Lesson: Divide students into 6 groups. Assign each group a letter A – F. Cut apart inequalities. Make a “yes” box and a “no” box. If you don’t have a document camera, then copy the questions to a Power Point to display to class. (or copy to overhead sheet to display) Lesson: Have students move their desks to groups so they are able to discuss and hear everyone in their group. Give each group their corresponding inequality for #1 while placing question #1 where the class can read. Each group will decide if their inequality is correct or not and then place the inequality in the correct yes or no box. When everyone is ready, go over each inequality by having each group explain their decision. Continue in the same way for the remaining questions. You might want to make it a game and keep score.

Here's a great science mini-unit for the start of the year to help your middle school or intermediate students learn about the scientific method, design, and independent variables in a fun and hands-on way! This is also a great project to complete before a science fair unit! How to Use: Print a booklet (double-sided) for each student with pages 2-9. Print a single page 10 for each student. o Types of Variables: Read through as a class, give students time to identify the mistake, and teach students the three types of variables. o Designing Experiments : Students can work in pairs or small groups to think of how they would design experiments for the following situations. Come back together and share as a class, then ensure students complete the bottom section on their own to assess comprehension. o Paper Helicopter STEM Activity: Carefully go through the instructions. Choose a date in a couple of weeks for Registration Day (students will need at least 3 hours of class time to test models). The class after that can be Finals Day. Next, students use their single sheet (p. 10) to make the initial design and test it several times to see how long it takes to fall. o Helicopter Logbook: Students make at least three new designs. Each time they should only change one variable from the previous design. So, they could first change the wing length. After that, they could change the type of paper, and finally, they could change the size of the model, etc. Each time they explain, predict, make the model, observe 3 trials, and reflect. o Registration Day: Once students have tested at least 3 designs and have their best one, they make a fresh template of that design to hand in. Finals Day: Students have 10 minutes to create their final helicopter from their template. Everyone tests three times, and the class winner can be determined! [Note: The best design usually ends up being a simple, tiny square of paper!] o Reflection: Students complete the three questions and put all their pages together to be marked out of 50.

What You Get: This is a Number Sequences Activity Setthat was designed for elementary students who are working on or have mastered this skill. It also works well as a review for students. There are 2 separate PDFs included: - Worksheet with 3 activity problems - Answer key How To Implement This Resource: You can print off enough copies of the worksheet for each student to have. You may also choose to print only a few copies and laminate those. If you choose to laminate them, students can use dry erase markers to solve the problems. This is a great activity to place into a math center or small group activity . The activities included are: 1. What’s the rule? – There are 16 questions. Students will look at each sequence to determine if the numbers are increasing or decreasing and by how many. 2. Missing Number Sequences – There are 14 questions. Students will determine the rule and then fill in the missing numbers. 3. Follow the Rule! – There are 14 questions. Students will read the rules and complete the number sequences.
