He meets a Jewish boy named Shmuel who is wearing the striped uniform of a prisoner. Despite the barbed wire fence separating them, Bruno and Shmuel form a friendship, and Bruno begins to visit him regularly, bringing him food and playing games with him. As the movie progresses, Bruno starts to become aware of the true nature of the camp and the treatment of the prisoners.
