ee or ea Phonic Game
ELA, Language Development, Phonics, Preschool, Grade 1, 2, Activities, Games
Pick the Apples — ea or ee Spelling Families Card Game: A game for 2 players A simple, fun board game I made to help children distinguish between ea and ee: two digraphs that sound the same but belong to different spelling families. Reading words with these sounds is straightforward once the patterns have been taught — but spelling is much harder. The child must remember not just the sound, but which family the word belongs to. Does feet use ee ? Does eat use ea ? This game gives children repeated, low-pressure practice sorting words into the right family, building the kind of memory that eventually makes correct spelling automatic. How to play: Each player takes a tree baseboard loaded with apple cards. Sound cards ( ea and ee ) and a couple of bad apple cards go into a feely bag. Picture cards are laid face up on the table. On each turn, a player draws a sound card from the bag and must find a picture card showing a word that contains that sound. A Word Bank Card is on hand for checking — the adult can help younger or less confident children locate the right word at first. A correct match lets the player keep the cards and move one apple from the tree to the basket. Draw a bad apple card, and the turn is lost. The first player to pick all their apples wins. Games make for stress-free learning! The bad apple cards introduce an element of luck that children love — and which serves a real purpose. When a child loses, it was the bad apple's fault, not theirs. For children who are used to struggling, that small thing makes a surprising difference. They stay in the game, stay relaxed, and the sorting and matching does its work quietly in the background. Useful for assessment too! Teachers will find the game useful for assessment too. Watch how the child approaches each picture card. Are they thinking about the sound and searching their memory for the right spelling family? Or are they recognising words by sight and hoping for the best? The answer tells you a lot about what to do next.

Letter P Worksheets + PowerPoint Lesson: Beginning Sounds Lesson 16
Special Resources, ELA, Special Education Needs (SEN), Language Development, Phonics, Speech Therapy, Kindergarten, Preschool, Worksheets, Worksheets & Printables, Presentations, Teacher Tools
Letter P Worksheets + PowerPoint Lesson Lesson 16 teaches the letter Pp and its related phonic sound through a 34-slide PowerPoint lesson, and 5 follow-up activity worksheets. All you need to teach the phonic letter P! Whether in school or at home, this series of phonic presentations can help you effectively teach initial/beginning sounds to all pupils, including those with special needs/dyslexia. This lesson is part of a synthetic, systematic phonics programme for all abilities, including those suspected of being dyslexic. This lesson is in the first stage of the Reading Made Simple programme, where we teach the initial, or beginning, sounds. The ability to hear the initial/beginning sound is stressed throughout, while we learn to associate each letter with its sound. Each lesson can stand alone, but the activities will presume knowledge of the previous letters in the alphabet as Reading Made Simple teaches the initial sounds in alphabetical order. Special features of the Letter P Worksheets and PowerPoint presentation: The PowerPoint is silent so that you can interact with your child in the best way for them: full instructions are provided at the bottom of each slide - be sure to show 'Notes'. The PowerPoint is editable so that you can make it fit your pupils. Science of Reading Aligned Truly phonetic; no 'i' for 'ice-cream'. We focus heavily on phonemic awareness, which is so necessary for a head start in phonics The child is given plenty of opportunities to learn the necessary skills - perfection is not expected in lesson 1. Still, the teacher will look for the development of the necessary skills as the child works through the alphabet. What is included in the Letter P worksheets Pack? A 34-slide PowerPoint which teaches phonemic awareness, letter/sound correspondence and letter formation, along with practice games 5 follow-up, Letter P worksheets How can this resource be used? It can be used in multiple ways: As the child learns each sound, you can use the PowerPoint lesson to reinforce your lesson It can be sent home for a child to watch with his/her parents after being taught the letter Pp in class - this will then act as revision as well as training the parent as to what is necessary to help the child. Use in class Use at home by parents or for home education Suggested Method: Introduce each letter in turn to your pupil. Have a flashcard of the letter ready. Say each letter's sound to the child and ask him/her to repeat it thrice. Explain that some words begin with this sound. Give an example. You can use the lesson as teacher training for yourself, to learn how to teach your child, or to use it with the child. Choose suitable activities (matching your child's ability) from the pack of worksheets. Notes are suggestions only. Use language appropriate to your pupil and be sure to interact naturally. However, could you focus on the child's hearing of the sounds at the beginning of words? This is often overlooked in the quest to help children learn the initial sounds as quickly as possible. Technical help: Please open PowerPoint in normal mode so you can see the notes and use the 'Draw' tool when prompted. Some slides are interactive. e or ee? Phonic Game
Special Resources, ELA, Special Education Needs (SEN), Language Development, Phonics, Reading, Spelling, Kindergarten, Preschool, Activities, Games
This "e or ee?" Phonic Game is a listening game to help the child hear the "ee" sound in words, as different to the "e" sound, since some children have real difficulty hearing this new sound. This is a simple oral game for 2 players, designed to develop the ability to hear the sounds as separate in words, without the need to worry about text yet. No reading or spelling is required at this stage — it's purely a hearing game. No die is needed; each player simply builds a tower of coloured beads as they correctly identify the "ee" sound in a word. These children may have auditory processing difficulties, of which there are growing numbers. With recognition of their needs and timely intervention, many can survive school. Sadly, without it, they may soon fall behind. If you have a child who cannot easily hear the graphemes in words, find or make a game to help. This is one such game you can use. Background to why I made this game One of my pupils has a speech delay. When I introduced him to "ee", he tried to sound out the words by saying "e" instead. It was as if "ee" was a foreign sound to him. So I devised this game to help him hear the "ee" sound in words he already uses frequently. After playing it a few times, he happily sounded out words to read and spell with the "ee" sound. Who can use the "e or ee?" Phonic Game? Anyone teaching a child who has difficulty learning to read words with /ee/, trying instead to say /e/. It's especially useful for children with speech delay or auditory processing difficulties who need extra support hearing this distinction before they're ready to decode it in print. What is included? 1 PDF containing the full game, base boards, picture cards, bead counters, and instructions for making and playing.

26 ABC Coloring Pages
Special Resources, ELA, Special Education Needs (SEN), Speech Therapy, Language Development, Pre-Reading, ESL, Phonics, Kindergarten, Preschool, Worksheets & Printables, Worksheets
Here is a fun pack of 26 Alphabet Coloring Pages: Color the Alphabet and Learn Beginning or Initial Sounds! This teaching resource includes 26 coloring worksheets designed to help young children (or those with a special need) become familiar with the letters of the alphabet and the sounds they stand for—the beginning sounds. Each page focuses on one alphabet letter: the children colour the large letter at the top of the page and say the 'etter's sound. Then, they must look for things that begin with that sound and color them. A challenge to make the sheets more beneficial: For every sound except 'A', every page contains a picture of one object that begins with the previous sound in the alphabet. Can the pupil find it? This ensures that the work is systematic and provides revision. Teaching tips: Pupils need to learn to hear the beginning sound of words, not just learn the sounds made by the letters. To this end: Help the child, if necessary, by emphasising the beginning sound: you can hold onto it until to help the child hear it. Do help the child to extend each worksheet by looking for things around the classroom that begin with each sound as it is studied. Helping to develop pencil control Coloring is not just a pastime but can be a help to train the child to work neatly (can sh/e color between the lines?) as well as to develop pencil control. Who are these sheets for? Homeeducators/homeschoolers early learners, Those with a special need, parents as well as private tutors Speech and language therapists Teachers of ESL/EFL Suitable for homelearning/extra practice at home It is suggested that an adult work with the child while the sheet is completed, either in small groups or individually, for best effect. What is included in the 26 ABC Coloring Pages? 1 PDF A4 with 26 pages, one for each letter. They are grouped in alphabetical order If you do not teach the letter sounds in alphabetical order, please ensure that all sounds needed to complete a sheet have been introduced to the child to avoid failure.

Learn to Write Letters
ELA, Language Development, Phonics, Writing, Handwriting, Kindergarten, Preschool, Worksheets & Printables, Worksheets
This is a first, simple 'learn to write' book teaching letter formation linked to beginning sounds for young children. Learning to write and learning to read go hand in hand, and this book was designed to bring the two together right from the very start. Rather than practising letter shapes in isolation, each page anchors the letter to a picture and a sound, so the child is always connecting what they see, hear and write. Order and steps: Each page has a picture of something that begins with the sound to be practised. The child can colour the picture while thinking about the sound it begins with. The letter is then practised first in lower case, then in upper case, and finally alternating lower and upper case, so the child gets plenty of repetition without it feeling repetitive. Red dots indicate where each letter starts, and arrows show the direction of travel on the first letter of both the upper and lower case rows - useful for parents and teachers who want to be sure they are guiding the child correctly from the outset. Finally, each page finishes with a simple question, encouraging the child to think of other things that begin with that sound, and stretching their spoken vocabulary a little further each time. By teaching the letters alongside their letter sound, we make the learning of phonics truly multisensory - seeing, saying, and writing all working together to help the sound and shape stick. The book is sized perfectly for little hands, making it easy for young children to hold and manage independently as their confidence grows. What is included: 1 PDF. There is one page for each letter. Printing and paper Each page is A5 size. Print 2 pages per A4 sheet and either fold and staple (if you print as a booklet, flip on the short edge), or cut into 2 pages. More This book pairs well with our Handwriting Patterns book, which builds the pencil control needed before letter formation begins. More This book can be used alongside our Handwriting Patterns book , helping children to develop good pencil control.

B and D Reversal — A Structured Daily Intervention Programme
Common Core, Phonics, Language Development, ELA, Spelling, Special Education Needs (SEN), Special Resources, Kindergarten, Grade 1, 2, 3, 4, Charts, Teacher Tools, Lesson Plans
B and D Reversal — A Structured Daily Intervention programme to tackle a real problem: Dyslexic Logic Font used with permission. B and D reversal is one of the most persistent problems in early literacy. This resource is still being trialled. I created it for a proudly dyslexic 11-year-old whose ongoing b/d/ confusion is causing him much discouragement. In theory, it should work, but it does need the teacher to hold the line for the pupil for as long as it takes - a long-rooted plant is not pulled out easily, and likewise an ingrained habit is not changed easily. If you too have a desperate pupil - please join the trial! I am happy to receive feedback. The Problem Children who confuse these two letters are not being careless, nor are they failing to try, as some suppose. They know that Bee says 'b' and Dee says 'd' — they have moved beyond learning beginning sounds. The problem is not knowledge — it is retrieval. When a child is writing at speed, the brain cannot always pull up the right letter shape quickly enough. The child starts to write, and the wrong shape is already on the page. They do not have time to sit there working out which way round a b or a d goes. They guess. And nine times out of ten , they get it wrong. The teacher points out the errors. The child feels dumb. Parents and teachers scour the web for a solution. They try one thing after another with the same fruitless results. The usual approaches — the bed trick, the b hand, repeated correction — all share the same flaw. They ask the child to retrieve the correct answer from memory under pressure. The b hand fails because the child cannot remember which hand is which. That is precisely what they cannot do reliably. A strategy that depends on the thing that is broken will not fix the thing that is broken. The Solution Remove the need to retrieve the correct shape and formation from memory entirely. This pack gives the child a simple visual reference — a card with a picture embedded in each letter shape, fixed permanently to the desk, with a clear starting point for letter formation marked on each letter. One glance before writing, and the right letter is there. No memory required. No cognitive load. Just the correct letter, every time. The Dyslexic Logic Font — used with permission — is used throughout. This helps pupils establish the correct letter shape more easily. What is included Table cards for the desk, bookmarks for reading books and folders, and smaller cards for use wherever your child writes. Every format ensures the cue is always within reach — because a cue that is not there cannot help. Five lists of pre-written daily word sets — carefully sequenced from single b words through to mixed b and d in longer words. Nothing to prepare. Just open and use. Record sheets — a simple daily checklist tracking whether your child chose the correct letter, checked the card independently, and formed the letter correctly. Includes a progress chart the child completes themselves and a readiness check so you know exactly when to move to the next stage. A full step-by-step guide for parents and teachers. This is the part most similar resources leave out. A visual cue only works if the child has been properly trained to use it — consistently, every time, before they write rather than after. The guide explains exactly how to do that, how to handle resistance, and what to expect over time. A video guide showing the full programme in action — because seeing it is easier than reading about it. There are no quick fixes here. The habit of checking takes weeks to establish and months to become fully automatic. But with consistent use, it works — and this pack gives you everything you need to make that happen. Suitable for use at home or in the classroom with any child who has a persistent b and d reversal problem, regardless of which reading programme they are following.
