Addition of Fractions Using a Line Plot

Addition of Fractions Using a Line Plot
Common Core, Math, Fractions, Elementary, Worksheets & Printables

This file is a two page worksheet of 8 problems for students to add fractions which are represented on a line plot to use with 5th grade math. Using a line plot when adding fractions can be a helpful visual tool, especially for students or learners who are still mastering the concept of fractions and need a more tangible way to understand the process. A line plot allows learners to see the fractional parts on a number line. This makes it easier to understand how the fractions combine, especially when dealing with fractions with the same denominator. Line plots show how fractions add up to form whole numbers. When the fractions sum to a whole, it’s visually obvious on the number line. For instance, if you're adding 3/4 + 1/4, a number line shows how the fractions build up to 1. For younger learners, or learners new to fractions, line plots can make abstract concepts more concrete. They can directly see how the fractions are added, rather than relying solely on algorithmic methods.

Please review the slide notes on each slide to better understand the directions and flow of the lesson. The 7th Slide is a personalized handout you can create for each student with their name and it will state " Jenny Is A Good Sport" or whatever you would like to say on it. Simply click on the Word Art and change the name or words for your sports' personalized mindfulness coloring sheet. This is a great extension to this lesson. The lesson begins with a quick opener of having the students do 5 wall or floor push-ups. This is a great opener and engagement activity. Then student will think-pair-share with a partner about poor versus good sportsmanship examples. Then they can share out or you can have a student or two write down the poor versus good examples in a T chart on the Smartboard or a poster sheet. Next students will tally the amount of good sportsmanship examples they see in a Youtube video. Discuss everyone's calculations! Next, you will discuss the directions to the game of slapjack (the video is in the slide on Slideshow and also in the Slide Notes). This is where the teachable moments come in. Say to the class "Please look for the person in your group who is showing Good Sportsmanship" behaviors. After the game, ask students to write down the name of someone of a couple people who showed good sportsmanship behaviors. Then as you say the names, ask the students to echo each name to honor those students. Lastly, if there is time or on another day, copy the personalized handouts for each student with their name. Following Directions SEL Activity

Following Directions SEL Activity
Special Resources, Social Emotional Learning (SEL), Social Skills, Special Education Needs (SEN), Kindergarten, Preschool, Grade 1, 2, Activities, Worksheets & Printables

In this SEL product, you will get 3 handouts. One is the directions you will give to students with prompts for them to follow your directions. There are 6 prompts; cut out the 4 pictures, glue the bird on top of the tree, glue the ball on the left side of the tree, glue the puppy to the right of the tree, and glue the sun on the top right corner of the page. Then students are instructed to color the picture. There is a picture of the final scene if the students follow the directions. The 2nd one is the handout for the students to cut out images and glue them onto the handout. There are 4 images to cut out; a ball, a bird, a puppy, and a sun. They will glue around a tree. The 3rd is a fun mindfulness coloring sheet with owls (they are wise to follow directions) with the title "I'm A 1st Time Listener!" This is a great lesson for helping students put into practice after learning the tips for following directions and paying attention in school. You first can go over the key tips such as 1) Look at the speaker, 2) Listen to the directions, 3) Say O.K. (acknowledge the task), and then 4) Do the activity or task. Following directions is a great skill to model and practice. It is important to not assume students know this skill-especially after the pandemic. In my own work as a school counselor, I have noticed students have difficulty with even the most simple directions. Hopefully, this activity will help your students as well. This activity is a great follow-up to my Boom Deck on following directions here: https://teachsimple.com/product/following-directions-sel-boom-cards-with-audio In the Boom Deck above, the students will get to move objects based on the directions. A-E Phonic Game To Develop Phonemic Awareness
Special Resources, ELA, Language Development, Pre-Reading, Phonics, Reading, Spelling, Kindergarten, Preschool, Grade 1, 2, Activities, Games

Here is a fun, print 'n play phonic game for the split digraph a-e! Help your pupils to grasp the tricky split digraph concept as they play! Who is the a-e game suitable for? All learners of phonics, including young children, SEN/special needs, ESL etc... Aims and Objectives Some children, when starting to learn about the long /a-e/ sound will start to make every /a/ into a long /a-e/ sound. While this is common among all children, some children need more help to overcome this difficulty. Therefore, this game has two aims: 1.To help children to be able to hear the long vowel sound a-e in words 2.To help children understand that some words have a short /a/ and some have a long /a-e/; the child must listen to hear which word has which - not guess. How to play: This is a game for two ore three players, one of which should be an adult. The game can be played with either pictures or sounds. Each player takes a game board (either pictures or sounds) which will indicate whether the player should listen for words with a short /a/ sound or a long /a-e/ sound. The adult reads a word on the word card, and the pupils must listen for 'e' or no 'e'? If the pupil has the sound/ picture on his/her board, she/he covers up a space. the winner fills hi/her board first. Teaching tips: Help children to hear the vowel sound by emphasizing it and stretching it out. Help the child to do this as well. Have fun - as this eases children over those tricky spots! What is included? 1 PDF with 2 game sound boards, 2 picture boards, squares to cover up and a word (readers) card. See more fun phonic games in the Lilibette's Resources store! Practice Sheet - Adding Fractions Using an Area Model

Practice Sheet - Adding Fractions Using an Area Model
Common Core, Math, Fractions, Grade 5, Worksheets & Printables

This resource is a nine problem, two page practice sheet for adding fractions using an area model for use with 5th grade math. Students are asked to shade a given area model to represent the fractions being added. They then write the congruence statement for the problem using the common denominator. The benefits for students to use an area model instead of the standard algorithm are: it provides a visual representation helping students to see how the parts of a whole fit together, they help students see the significance of the numerator and denominator in representing fractions and how they relate to the size of the pieces being added, they increase the concept of the relative size of the pieces being added, the models naturally lead to the need for a common denominator when adding fractions, models increase students number sense and relational thinking, and models accommodate varying learning styles. The standard covered is: Add and subtract fractions with unlike denominators by replacing given fractions with equivalent fractions in such a way as to produce an equivalent sum or difference of fractions with like denominators. Follow the worksheet with these adding and subtracting fractions flashcards .

Converting Improper Fractions to Mixed Numbers - I Have Who Has Game

Converting Improper Fractions to Mixed Numbers - I Have Who Has Game
Common Core, Math, Fractions, Elementary, Activities

Converting between improper fractions and mixed numbers is a fundamental skill that: Develops number sense Helps students understand the relationship between wholes and parts Makes quantities more tangible and intuitive (7/3 becomes 2⅓, which is clearer) Strengthens understanding of place value and magnitude Has practical applications Cooking measurements (2⅓ cups is more practical than 7/3 cups) Construction and carpentry (3¾ inches vs 15/4 inches) Everyday measurements and estimations Builds mathematical foundations for: Adding and subtracting fractions Working with mixed operations Understanding rational numbers Later work with algebraic fractions Improves mental math abilities Helps with estimation Makes calculations more manageable Develops flexible thinking about numbers Directions for the Class Activity – I Have Who Has 1. Make a copy of the cards and cut apart. You will only need one set to reuse for all of your classes. Use color paper and laminate if possible. (I had a set of I Have Who Has cards that were not laminated, used them for several years, and they held up well.) Keep an uncut copy for you to use as a key. 2. Have students number 1 - 35 on a piece of paper. 3. Mix up the cards and pass them out, one to each student. There are 35 cards so if you have fewer than 35 students then give some students two cards. 4. Any student can start with their WHO HAS. (If some students have 2 cards, start with one of them.) The student that has the mixed number for the WHO HAS statement speaks up and says I HAVE ____ WHO HAS_____. (reading their card) They should read their WHO HAS twice. All students will record the answer on their paper whether they have the card or not, trying to beat the person who has the card. Continue in this manner until you return to the starting card and they will then get to say their I HAVE. 5. You can repeat this activity by mixing up the cards before handing them out again. You can even repeat the activity over several days. ***** Make sure to count your cards after taking them back up from students. Even one missing card ruins the activity.********
