Healthy Versus Unhealthy Friendships SEL PowerPoint And Game

In this lesson, students will learn about the difference between healthy and unhealthy friendship behaviors. I use the analogy of a stoplight to distinguish between green (healthy), yellow (warning), and red (unhealthy) friendship behaviors. There is a 9-slide PowerPoint presentation that walks you through the entire lesson with slide notes. After the presentation, there is a reinforcing friendship game . The game board and 36 editable friendship behavior cards are on slides 10-19 and can be printed off in color or black and white. The game board needs to be printed in color. There is a fun and short video to show the class about friendship. I utilize whole group, small group, and partner activities in this lesson for engagement and variety. This lesson can flexibly span between 30-45 minute periods based on the amount of discussion you encourage and your needs/time constraints. There are 30 cards (some instructional cards explaining the different friendship behaviors) and plenty of task cards for an entire class to take turns on the Smartboard to decide if a situation is red, yellow or green. This is an important friendship skill when learning about making and keeping friends. Both of these resources are great for third, fourth, fifth, sixth and middle school. Speech Presentation and Videography with Assessment Rubrics Over the thirty-two years I taught, I was committed to a differentiated instruction practice. “Differentiated Instruction” is a teaching method in which the number of students who perform well is increased by offering a variety of equivalent ways to learn and show what they have learned. It is a far more satisfying method for teacher and student to offer alternative work product options of equivalent difficulty. This would be in contrast to a traditional method where everyone takes the same test at the end of a unit. While maintaining a healthy respect for traditional assessments in high stakes situations and the usefulness of standardized testing, one can still create a classroom environment where students can demonstrate their progress through multiple means. I have a large collection of rubrics for different kinds of "capstone" assignments for teaching social studies. This collection: scoring rubrics for grading student performances for giving a speech, doing a class presentation, or producing a short video. This Speech Presentation and Videography with Assessment Rubrics resource comes with four different rubrics: Five minute presentation rubric High School Video Documentary rubric Speech rubric Video Documentary rubric Differentiated instruction started to became popular in the late 1990s. In my view, many did not do this well because they left out an important feature: if a student has an alternative assignment to the unit test, that assignment must be of equivalent difficulty. This is a challenging feat to accomplish for the teacher, but not impossible. One way to do this is using a statistical tool called z-score standardization. In this way, scores on the traditional test and scores on the alternative assignment can be compared such that one can see how more or less difficult the alternative task is and, consequently, how to score it. SEL Presentations Boom Deck-Traffic Light Feelings With Audio

In this SEL Boom Deck SEL presentation, there are 24 playing task cards with audio so there is no reading required. There are also 7 informational cards with audio as well. Students will learn about traffic light feelings. There are different intensity levels of feelings and each one is a certain color. For example, red means stop-this is when one is feeling angry, unsafe, really upset or scared. Yellow means slow down; feelings associated with yellow are worried, silly, excited, distracted in class and frustrated. Green means go-the feelings associated with green are happy, calm, proud, and focused. Students will click on either the red, yellow or green light image at the bottom of every page. There is a prompt to have students share what strategies can be used if someone is red or yellow and need to calm down. Some of the examples given in the Boom Deck are; Adam was nervous about the first day of school, Yani was frustrated that his friend was not playing by the rules, Sam knocked down his tower because he was upset about not having more red blocks, Julie was happy it was yoga day in P.E. today, Chase was super scared about the shadow of the cactus, Gigi felt grateful for her birthday present, Evan was super excited it was carnival day at school, Pari was feeling scared about the thunder and lightening, and many more child relatable scenarios. This lesson can be used for preschool, kindergarten, first grade and second grade. This lesson will help students self-regulate by encouraging them to identify and manage those strong feelings many students (and adults) have throughout the day. I made this fruit picture-to-word matching game as a simple digital activity for early literacy practice. Students click to match each fruit picture with its word. The levels start small with just 3 pairs and gradually increase to 10 pairs, so it works for a range of ability levels and attention spans. Each level includes three versions, which helps keep it from feeling repetitive. This digital game includes: memory levels from 3 to 10 pairs three variations of each level a one-player option a two-player version with a simple scoreboard a PowerPoint Show file (.ppsx) directions built right into the game The fruit vocabulary includes apple, pear, peach, plum, grapes, lemon, kiwi, cherries, banana, orange, watermelon, grapefruit, blueberries, and pineapple. I’ve actually played the highest level with another adult, and it was surprisingly challenging for us (maybe that says something about older brains!). The increasing number of cards really does make a difference. There’s nothing to print or set up. Just open the file and start playing. Important: This game uses PowerPoint animations (including “disappear” effects) and is designed to run in the desktop version of Microsoft PowerPoint. It will not function correctly in Google Slides or in browser-based versions of PowerPoint.
