This Guided Reading Book - The Hidden World of Viruses (Level M) with lesson plan includes: Guided Reading Color Label (front cover x1) This is a quick way to match the book’s demands to what students can generally handle.. The overall goal is to use the level/color to pick books for several smaller groups. To qualify for a certain level, a student is expected to read a book from that level with about 90–94% accuracy. If a student is consistently accurate and understands, move up a level. If the student is struggling at that level, drop down and add more support. Each student will improve at completely different rates, but it is generally one of the best ways to check progress across the class. DOWNLOAD THE CATALOG TO VIEW ALL GUIDED READING BOOKS AVAILABLE (SORTED LEVELS A-Z) Pre-Reading Question (x1) Teacher asks the prompt aloud, can be while showing the cover or first page. Students share what they already know, or make educated guesses from the cover. Prompt them to use the target vocabulary. Write some of their responses on the board to look back at during the reading. Vocabulary Words (x5) Introduce the five words, best doing it one at a time. Start by saying it, while students repeat and then see if anyone knows what it means before reading further. Read through the meaning and try to briefly connect each word to a picture or gesture so it’s meaningful. Ask students to flip through the book pages and point to where they see each of the vocabulary words. While reading the book pause upon coming across one of the vocab words or read the sentence twice to make sure students understand the word has appeared. Optional: Ask students to raise hands whenever they see/hear one of the new words. Guided Reading Pages (x10) Check the book snapshot (below) for: primary topic - do you need to prep extra reading or intro materials on this? what is taught best - decide on 1-2 bullets to focus on, use the prompt or words provided here for best results. learning goals - what you are checking for students to be able to do after the session, elicit answers using prompts or words provided. key vocabulary (see section above). questions overview - so you know what is coming up and if you need to prep extra materials to assist understanding. Run the lesson You may have already looked at a few of the pages together, but you can show them some of the pictures again first to set meaning. Depending on how much time you have and how familiar your students are with guided reading class, you may want to read the book aloud first with the group first. Students whisper or partner read, while you listen in. If time, do it as a group, one student reading a page each. Use the guided page’s prompts to coach: “Check the picture / does it make sense?” “Point under the words / try the first sound” “Reread the sentence smoothly”. Try to focus more on one student per session (rotating every time), so you can work out if they are ready to move up or need to move down a level. Comprehension Questions (back cover x3) This is your way to check that students didn’t just say the words, but actually understood the text. First, let students answer by pointing to the page/picture and saying a short sentence. After any answer, follow with: “Show me where you found that in the text.” In bigger groups, have partners answer first (10–20 seconds), then call on 2–3 students to share. Differentiation tips: Emerging speakers/struggling readers: oral + pointing On-level: oral in a full sentence Higher: one written sentence or draw + label Book Snapshot Title: The Hidden World of Viruses Genre: Nonfiction (informational science text) Subject: Life Science Primary Topic: What viruses are and how they spread Estimated Guided Reading Level (A–Z): M What This Book Teaches Best Viruses are extremely tiny and require powerful microscopes to study. Viruses come in different shapes (round, rod-like, and multi-sided). A virus is not considered fully living and must find a living cell to begin its work. Viruses carry genetic material (DNA or RNA) that provides instructions for how the virus functions. How viruses infect cells, make copies, leave the cell, and how antibodies and vaccines help protect the body. Learning Goals Students will explain why scientists use microscopes to study viruses. Students will describe at least two shapes viruses can have, based on the text. Students will explain why a virus needs a host cell and what happens when it attaches to one. Students will describe how a cell becomes a “biological factory” that produces new viruses. Students will describe how new viruses leave a cell and spread into the surrounding environment. Students will explain how antibodies and vaccines help the body recognize and stop viruses. Key Vocabulary From the Text microscopic — so tiny you need a microscope to see it. particles — very small bits or pieces of something. genetic — related to information inside living things. antibodies — proteins the body makes to help stop viruses. vaccines — help train the body to recognize and stop invaders. Discussion Prompts Pre-reading question: Why might something too small to see still matter a lot to people? Comprehension questions: What does the book say viruses do that makes microscopes necessary for scientists? Comprehension questions: After a virus pushes its genetic material into a cell, what does the message tell the cell to do? Learners will: - explore fossils in order to gain a perspective of evolution - watch several free videos and fossils - complete a worksheet - complete a think pair share activity - informational text and a transitional fossil coloring activity. ⚘ Evolution Curriculum must contain Tiktaalik Tiktaalik is special because it provides insights into how early life transitioned from the ocean to the land. Although we cannot trace our family tree directly back to Tiktaalik, we know an animal much like Tiktaalik was a direct ancestor to modern humans. In 2004, up in the Nunavut Territory of the Artic, archeologists discovered the fossilized remains of a an odd creature with a flat head, scales, little arms and it grew up to three meters (9 feet) long. It had the body of a fish and appeared to have four primitive limbs allowing it to crawl on land. Scientists didn’t find just one specimen – but ten all together. Carbon dating informed scientists the animals lived about 375 million years ago in the late Devonian Period. Archeologists asked the local Inuit tribe to name the fish. A local council of elders known as the Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit Katimajiit were consulted, and they gave Tiktaalik its name, ᑎᒃᑖᓕᒃ, which translates to a large freshwater fish that lives in the shallows, in Inuktitut.

This product covers the 2016 Virginia (VA) Standards of Learning (SOL) 3.7 The student will estimate and use U.S. Customary and metric units to measure a) length to the nearest 1/2 inch, inch, foot, yard, centimeter, and meter; and b) liquid volume in cups, pints, quarts, gallons, and liters. note that this will also work for the 2023 VA SOL 3.MG.1 The student will reason mathematically using standard units (U.S. Customary and metric) with appropriate tools to estimate and measure objects by length, weight/mass, and liquid volume to the nearest half or whole unit. (except this one does not cover any weight/mass measurement notes) It contains notes pages on measuring the length of an object. It also has notes on customary and metric increments, as well as customary and metric capacity. There are practice pages for each topic, with an answer key included. The notes pages come in two sizes. The first size is a full-page size. You can print them as-is, or you can print them two to a pages. This is what I do as it saves on paper and the sheets will fit in a notebook. The second size is formatted to fit on a standard composition notebook page.
