Help your students develop the essential life skill of cognitive flexibility with this 42-page evidence-based workbook and Teacher's Guide that will provide support for rigid thinkers in grades 3-6 to successfully deal with unexpected changes and disappointments within their schedules without experiencing a meltdown. This resource is based on the principles of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and provides help for helping students manage their behaviors; however, it is more than providing behaviour management as it is designed to provide support to help students understand their "prediction brain," change their "sticky thoughts," and develop a "Plan B" mindset helping students turn crisis situations into opportunities to demonstrate growth and resilience. What is inside (42 providing all pages): Part I: The Theory (for Parents & Educators): Simple, clear and easy to understand concepts of “why” an individual has a rigid way of thinking. Includes information about the neurobiology of an amygdala hijack, anatomy of disappointment, and the principles behind “Predictive Scenario Mapping.” Also, two examples with actual case studies. Part II: Student Workbook (10 Actionable Worksheets): Fun, appropriate-to-age level worksheets that have examples kids deal with on a daily basis. These worksheets cover: Identifying “Glitches” vs. Feelings; Measuring Problem Size vs. Reaction Size; Transforming “Sticky” Thought to “Stretchy” Thought; Creating “Plan B” Blueprints for canceled events; Being Patient; (i.e. waiting for something); The Substitute Teacher Protocol; Compromise and Problem Solving in Social Situations; Understanding what it means for the body to be in an “alarmless” state (interoception); Recovering after a meltdown (rebooting your computer). Complete & Turn-Key: Not just a worksheet set! Included are implementation guides, answer sheets and visual aids to provide parents and educators all they need to begin using the program. Life Skill Development: Covers common, highly stressful situations (substitute teacher, canceled plans, losing a game) to give children real life solutions to use in the real world. Empowerment: Teaches children about their own brains and feelings (interoception) so they can control their emotions and have a means to communicate their needs or requests instead of just demanding obedience. Less Meltdowns & Disruptive Behavior: Teaching coping skills in a calm environment helps to prevent meltdowns and disruptive behavior, leading to calmer households and classrooms. Student Target Group: Based on the content and complexity of the activities/activities in the document, students aged 3rd to 6th grade (approximately 8-12 years) are the priority audience for these resource/ar, as the ages are quoted many times throughout the document). Just Kidding by Trudy Ludwig SEL Companion Lesson
Special Resources, Social Emotional Learning (SEL), Social Skills, Special Education Needs (SEN), Grade 3, 4, 5, Worksheets & Printables, Worksheets
In this resource, students will read a book (or listen to the book) titled Just Kidding by Trudy Ludwig, Illustrated by Adam Gustavson. Then they will be able to do 5 different engaging activities. Teachers can plan this for 5 different centers or partner work with packets or even homework. It is up to the teacher or school counselor how they would like to conduct this resource. The key concepts are knowing the difference between hurtful and friendly teasing. This is a very important concept to teach early on as students try out different types of humor. Unintentionally or not, student may hurt other students' feelings based on their words, tone, and topic of teasing. It is also important to teach about "off limit" topics such as appearance, grades, athleticism, family members, etc. In this resource there are five different extension activities. They are; a word search with a secret message, a What Would You Do? questionnaire, a sign language secret message, a Find 10 Differences related to sports (I have added this because many teasing scenarios-friendly or hurtful-are often around sports activities and athleticism, a sorting activity about friendly or hurtful teasing, This activity can be used as a 5 centers activity whereas groups rotate from one center to another every 5 minutes (or as your time allows) or you can staple the activities (handouts) together to have partners complete and work together or you could send as homework after reading the story in class. Regardless, the extension activities will enhance the students' perspective of this very important concept of knowing the difference between hurtful and friendly teasing. Don't Stir The Drama Pot-An SEL Presentation Plus SEL Coloring Page
Special Resources, Social Emotional Learning (SEL), Social Skills, Creative Arts, Art, Special Education Needs (SEN), Life Skills, Grade 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, Teacher Tools, Lesson Plans, Worksheets & Printables, Worksheets, Coloring Pages, Writing Prompts
In this product, you will get a Google Slides lesson with SEL coloring pages and Writing prompts discussing what causes drama among friends, what makes things worse (heats it & stirs it up) and what makes things better (what cools it down). There are 10 situations to discuss as a class. You can have students use fingers (1-5) or move to stations around the room to choose what they would do in different situations. Finally, there is a reflection and a coloring activity to reinforce the importance of being drama-free. This lesson will address friendship skills, relationship skills as well as social awareness. You can use this for whole-classroom guidance lessons, small groups, and even one on one counseling. There are descriptions of what heats up (fuels) drama among friends as well as what de-escalates friendship problems. There is a 19-slide presentation using Google Slides. In the PDF, you just need to click on the image of the main cover image. This is the image of a collection of the slide presentation, the reflection sheet, as well as the mindfulness coloring activity sheet. There are slide notes on every page. Please read each slide note for each slide. This will help you have a seamless lesson with very little prep and no need to prepare for your SEL lesson. The heat-up reasons are; involving other people as messengers, bringing up past situations, gossiping, using mean words, and blaming others. The cooldown strategies are; owning your stuff (taking responsibility for your own actions), sharing your own feelings, sticking to the current situation, listening to the other person's perspective, and calming down before you react. This is a great lesson to use if you are finding students have difficulty solving their own problems among their friendship groups, small groups for girls (in particular), or hosting lunch bunch groups for girls. This is not gender specific so you can use it for both genders if needed.

Emotional Regulation & Self-Care Planners for Teens
Special Resources, Social Emotional Learning (SEL), Life Skills, Social Skills, Special Education Needs (SEN), Speech Therapy, Life Studies, Coaching, Career, Leadership, Grade 9, 10, 11, 12, Teacher Tools, Assessments, Lesson Plans, Quizzes and Tests, Quizzes, Tests, Worksheets & Printables, Worksheets, Word Searches, Workbooks
The Emotional Regulation & Self-Care Planner for Teens (39 pages), which is available digitally as a curriculum and a planner, is laid out in three phases. The first phase (core content & theory) consists of four chapters dealing with the neurobiology of adolescent emotions, the cognitive restructuring process as well as working with the inner critic; somatic regulation (resilience of the nervous system); strategic self-care (boundary architecture). Also included are real-life case studies of teenagers (amygdala hijack, perfectionism spiral, freeze response/burnout cycle); The second phase consists of a student workbook that includes ten interactive worksheets (re: affective granularity/metacognition cognitive distortion; interoceptive/somatic map; navigating the Window of Tolerance boundary architecture; digital ecosystem audit; executive function/anticipatory anxiety; and interpersonal rupture & repair); The third phase consists of visuals & teacher resources (classroom visuals, answer keys, assessment rubrics, teacher implementation guide). The three visuals contain high-fidelity representations of the Window of Tolerance diagram; cognitive-behavioral triad; multidimensional self-care matrix). The teacher resources contain answer keys for each module and rubrics for use in assessing student work. The resource addresses self-care from three frameworks, cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), and polyvagal theory and defines self-care as "radical stewardship of oneself". It provides teenagers with practical tools for emotional regulation, managing stress, setting digital boundaries, and developing resilience. The resource was designed to be print-ready and tested in classrooms, and includes fillable blank forms and reflection items. What Parents/Schools Appreciate: Based on research and ready to use in class – Integrating CBT, DBT and Polyvagal Theory, the program includes worksheets for students as well as the teacher's key that connects with social emotional learning (SEL) standards, thereby saving weeks of lesson planning. Directly targeted to teens and highly engaging – The material is presented via case studies from students, real-world issues they face with the digital age and through visual diagrams that connect to these emotional learning experiences for grades 9-12. Trauma-informed and provides safety – The material provides the students with options, breaks the stigma on emotional learning and clearly explains the reporting protocols for educators, making it a resource they can use for success in diverse classrooms. Comprehensive and multi-functional – It can be used for whole class lesson plans, small group counseling, advisory periods or as a self-help resource for individual students, one product meets several needs. Immediate learning and long term benefit – Students develop ongoing skills in emotional granularity, boundary setting, and regulating their nervous system while parents and schools experience decreased levels of anxiety and increased levels of focus. Intended Students: Students in Grades 9-12 only. All the examples, case studies, language, and content are created specifically for high school students (ages 14-18) who are dealing with academic pressures, social media, peer group dynamics, forming their identity, and normal neurodevelopmental changes in the developing teenage brain. This material is inappropriate for middle school students (too mature) or college students (too teen-focused). Section Three: Visuals and Teacher/Counselor Resources: This section is important for the teachers and educators due to the fact it contains the following diagrams; the Academic Burnout Cascade, Trauma-Informed Coping Matrix and The Self-Auditing Cycle. Moreover, as far as the teacher can reach the information concerning students’ needs and problems. In that way, the person will be able to remain at the correct track. This tool is ideal for all kinds of professionals such as counselors, psychologists, teachers in health and wellness classes, and people working with the youth. Conflict Resolution SEL Skills Writing Challenge
P.E. & Health, ELA, Writing, Creative Writing, Grammar, Social Emotional Learning (SEL), Special Resources, Social Skills, Grade 2, 3, 4, 5, Worksheets & Printables, Worksheets
Teaching critical social emotional skills while getting kids to enjoy writing during the early elementary years is key. One way we can do that is to tie in their interests to the writing process. Conflict happen in every stage of life. Why not equip our younger learners with the strategies to resolve those conflicts well. This resource (and the others that complement it in this series!) seeks to provide the scaffolding needed for learners to imagine and begin telling a story in written form. Then they're invited into 5 different STEAM extension activities to keep the conversations going. Thinking about the way we think is a foundational skill for growing the executive functions our kiddos will use in the editing process. For this reason, a short checklist has been included at the end of page 4 so that learners can begin to go back and check their work. This key skill in developing healthy executive functioning is intentionally made visible to students to prompt ownership over the quality of their writing. STANDARDS: Meets CCSS Writing standards for grades 2-5. Remember, there are over a year's worth of writing activities in this line! Keep the fun stories rolling by checking out holiday, winter, summer, life skills, and adventure writing activities from Melissa Is Teaching! This printable is optimal for 2nd-5th graders as they take on the cognitively heavy task of writing a narrative, while also supporting them with the scaffolding and inspiration in the provided idea matrix. BONUS: Take advantage of the 4+ extension activity ideas included in this printable. These activities will take their writing beyond the page and bring it to life in STEAM-supported outlets. What you'll get: a 4 page PDF including instructions, extension activity ideas, and 3 student pages. One of these pages is simply writing space for you to print off as many copies as you need based on the amount your students are writing. You'll also find the editing checklist to prompt students to edit their own work for spelling, capitalization, and punctuation.
