Recognize Words as Mathematical Operations - Coloring Activity

This file contains 2 coloring activities for students to recognize words which mean the four operations of add, subtract, multiply, and divide. There is a 5 by 5 grid of squares with operational words. Students are asked to color the boxes containing addition words with blue, subtraction words with pink, multiplication words with yellow, and division words with orange. The words for addition are plus, sum, increase, greater than, add, more than, total and in all. The words for subtraction are reduce, minus, less than, difference, take away, subtract, decrease and reduce. The words for multiplication are of, product, multiply, double, twice and times. The words for division are share equally, quotient, divide and half. These activities are a prerequisite for students to solve word problems. The key is included and the standard covered is: Write simple expressions that record calculations with numbers, and interpret numerical expressions without evaluating them.

We are always searching for engaging ways to teach our students new skills and review skills that they already know! This is a 1-page worksheet that will allow students enough practice to sharpen their skills. Students will practice with Multiplying and Dividing Positive and Negative Numbers. The objective is for students to be able to understand the difference in the rules and apply them effectively to a variety of problems. This worksheet is most appropriate for 4th grade students. You may have 5th grade students who need the additional practice. There is 1 page included broken down into 3 sections. In the first section, students will: Solve each multiplication problem. If the signs are the same (e.g. negative x negative), your answer will be POSITIVE. In the second section, students will: Solve each division problem. If the signs are the same (e.g. negative x negative), your answer will be POSITIVE. In the third section, students will: Solve each multiplication and division problem. The signs are OPPOSITE (e.g. positive x negative) therefore the answer will always be NEGATIVE! You can easily print and laminate these pages, so they retain their durability for repeated use. Students can write answers with a dry erase marker. This will make a great math center or small group activity. This worksheet set is also great as an assessment . Answer key included.
