How do the two practice pages differ?
The first ten items are bare computation — find |−25|, write two integers with an absolute value of 4, find the distance between −2 and 6. The second ten move into comparison symbols and then five problems set in temperature change, diving depth, bank balances, city temperatures and elevator floors, followed by an abstract distance question.
What do the PRO TIP boxes say?
Two rules lifted out of the notes. The first: absolute value answers "How far?" — not "Which direction?" — so always check the sign when comparing numbers. The second: when comparing negatives, the number closer to zero is greater.
Which item asks students to compare two distances rather than two numbers?
Item 14, which asks whether the distance between −4 and 5 or the distance between −2 and 3 is greater. Both have to be worked out first; the key gives 9 and 5, so the first is greater.
