Page one uses 2-digit addends (worked example: 37 + 12 = 49, jumping +10 then +1 +1), followed by six problems including 28 + 41 and 128 + 23. Page two moves to 3-digit addends (worked example: 223 + 132 = 355, jumping +100, +10 +10 +10, +1 +1), with six further problems such as 428 + 403 and 622 + 203. Page three uses 4-digit addends (worked example: 2123 + 1332 = 3455, jumping +1000, +100 +100 +100, +10 +10 +10, +1 +1), with six further problems such as 4028 + 1403 and 6822 + 1163. Each page provides a blank open number line and a "MY ANSWER" line beneath every problem.

Teaching tips

  • Assign pages by student readiness rather than all three at once, since page one (2-digit) and page three (4-digit) sit at noticeably different difficulty levels for the same strategy.

  • Walk through the worked example at the top of each page as a class before releasing students to the six independent problems, since the jump sizes change page to page (tens only on page one; hundreds, tens, and ones on pages two and three).

  • Use page three's 4-digit problems as an extension or challenge set for students who have mastered the 2- and 3-digit levels.
