About This Product

A no prep classroom deescalation PD kit your own staff can lead. Run it as one full hour, or as four 15 minute blocks at PLCs or staff meetings. No video and no outside presenter.

Who it is for: principals, special education coordinators, instructional coaches, and teacher leaders who need behavior PD for teachers, paras, lunch and recess staff, after school programs, and childcare or preschool teams. It works for PreK to 12.

Why I made this: I have spent more than 20 years in education, and I have trained teachers in crisis prevention and deescalation for 15 years. Most rough moments in a classroom have a heat source: a loud room, a sudden transition, a hungry kid, or a kid who is lost on the work and would rather look tough than look lost. The adult is the secret to a calm room. Your face, your hands, your words, and your own personality set the temperature before any strategy does. This kit teaches staff to spot the heat early and turn it down in four steps: Read the room, Own your calm, Offer a Calm Move, and Mend and reconnect.

What's included (41 PDF pages plus a 20 slide deck):

• 20 slide presentation, editable PowerPoint with the script in the speaker notes on every slide, plus a 20 page PDF copy

• Start Here guide, 3 pages: two ways to run it, file list, license terms

• Word for word 60 minute facilitator script with timing, 7 pages

• Four 15 minute module scripts, one per step, 10 pages

• One page district rollout guide with a 4 week plan

• Scenario guides by grade band, 6 pages: 20 scenarios across PreK to 2, 3 to 5, 6 to 8, 9 to 12, and a set for paras, lunch, and recess

• Handouts, 14 pages: Heat Scale handout (2 sided) and poster, Know Your Default self check (2 pages), Calm Moves cards (8 per page, fronts and backs), Say This, Not That, 8 practice scenario strips, reflection sheet, exit ticket, before and after staff self check, sign in sheet, and an editable certificate of attendance

• All handouts print pack, 14 pages, with the fillable fields kept

How I use it: On an in service day I run the full hour from the script. During the year I run one step a week at the start of a staff meeting, using the 15 minute modules and the rollout guide's Monday email notes between weeks. Staff take the Know Your Default self check first, because once people know their own default style they stop trying to be a different teacher and start making their style work.

What you download: one zip (about 6 MB) with 19 files in one folder: 18 PDFs and one editable PowerPoint. Pages are US Letter. The slides open in PowerPoint, Google Slides, and Keynote.

Scope: this is everyday calm support for classrooms, not emergency or restraint protocol training. It is not a substitute for your school's crisis plan or any training your district requires. Follow your district's crisis procedures, and if anyone is in danger, get help right away. The certificate shows attendance; whether it counts toward license renewal hours is up to your district or state.
