Deescalation Staff Training Toolkit: Scripts, Scenario Cards, Agenda

About This Product
A ready to run staff training on preventing and deescalating challenging behavior with calm, consistent words. Use it for a staff meeting, a PLC, or a longer para and teacher workshop.
Who it is for: special education teams, paraprofessionals, behavior teams, and any school staff group that needs shared language for hard moments. It works for any grade.
Why I made this: I have trained teachers in crisis prevention and deescalation for 15 years. Over and over I have seen two adults in the same room say two different things to the same upset student, and it makes things worse. This toolkit gives a whole team the same words, the same warning signs, and the same plan, in a format someone in the building can lead without outside help.
What's included (one 15 page PDF):
• Start Here page with a 5 minute setup plan, 1 page
• Facilitator guide with three agendas (45 minute staff meeting, 60 minute PLC, 90 minute workshop for paras and teachers), learning objectives, and post incident steps, 3 pages
• Staff handouts, 5 pages: prevention practices, an early warning signs continuum, verbal deescalation scripts with phrases to retire, a staff post incident reflection, a classroom safety walkthrough checklist, and a cut out pocket card
• 12 scenario cards with fictional students from elementary through transition and vocational settings, plus facilitator answer notes, 3 pages
• Terms of use and a thank you page, 2 pages
How I use it: I pick the agenda that fits the time I have, print the handouts one per person, and cut out four to six scenario cards that match our building. We run one scenario together, then pairs practice the verbal scripts out loud. Staff who rehearse even two phrases when everyone is calm are much more likely to use them in the moment.
What you download: one printable PDF, 15 pages, US Letter.
Scope: this is everyday calm support and verbal deescalation, not emergency or restraint protocol training, and it is not a certification. It contains no physical intervention. Follow your district's crisis procedures and reporting rules.
