Teaching tips & learning objectives

Learning objectives

  • Describe what a dentist does and the steps of a dental checkup

  • Answer comprehension questions about a story at a visual, mixed, or written response level

  • Name twelve dental-visit vocabulary items from pictures

  • Anticipate the sequence of a dentist appointment (waiting room, exam room, cleaning, rinse)

Teaching tips

  • Read the story first, then choose the question level that matches each learner — the three levels ask the same questions with different response supports

  • Assign the digital version for independent practice; wrong clicks route to an 'Oops... try again' page and back to the question

  • Pre-teach the twelve vocabulary slides before the story so tools like floss and the dental mirror are familiar on sight

  • Use the pack before a real or role-played dental visit — the story's step-by-step structure works as a preparatory social narrative

Skills covered

  • Story comprehension — who/what/where questions target the story's characters, tools, and settings at three support levels.

  • Functional vocabulary — twelve picture-supported dental terms from toothbrush to syringe.

  • Sequencing a routine — the story orders a dental visit from waiting room through rinsing with mouthwash.

  • Independent digital responding — clickable answers with corrective feedback let students self-check.

Good to know

Questions teachers ask about this resource

How do the three question levels differ?

They ask essentially the same questions with different response demands: level one is 'where's the...?' with picture-only answer choices, level two pairs pictures with written words, and level three offers written choices alone — so emerging communicators through readers can all respond to the same story.

What makes the digital version different from the printable questions?

It is self-checking: each question's answer choices are clickable, and an incorrect choice lands on an 'Oops... Try again' page with a go-back link, letting students work through the questions independently on a device.
