Teaching tips & learning objectives
Learning objectives
Recognize the names of Industrial Revolution inventors and inventions, such as Richard Arkwright and the cotton gin, by locating them in a word search grid.
Teaching tips
Use the Answers tab at the bottom of the spreadsheet to switch between the blank puzzle and the solved grid rather than opening a separate file.
Print or project the grid as a quick warm-up when opening an Industrial Revolution inventors unit, since it surfaces several inventor names at once.
Follow the puzzle with a short discussion of each embedded inventor's contribution, since locating a name in the grid does not by itself explain the invention.
Skills covered
Grid searching — students visually search a 20-by-17 letter grid to locate embedded names running in different directions.
Historical name recognition — students identify Industrial Revolution figures and inventions, such as Richard Arkwright and the cotton gin, embedded in the puzzle.
