Teaching tips & learning objectives
Learning objectives
Identify the main idea of a text after reading and highlighting its supporting details.
Select and record six supporting details that support a text's main idea.
Teaching tips
Pair the organizer with a short story or article the class is currently reading, since the template itself contains no text of its own.
Use the DOCX version if you want to type a shared class example on-screen before students complete their own copy.
Since all five pages are identical, print only as many copies as you need per student rather than the full five-page set for every student.
Skills covered
Main idea identification — students determine a text's central idea after reading and highlighting supporting details.
Supporting detail selection — students choose specific details from a text that support the identified main idea.
