In the classroom

Teaching tips & learning objectives

Learning objectives

  • Students will assemble a flip book by stacking, stapling, and cutting pages according to the printed directions.

  • Students will flip the three digit columns to build different three-digit numbers.

  • Students will identify which column of a formed number represents hundreds, tens, and ones.

Teaching tips

  • Copy the back cover onto cardstock, or cut a piece of construction paper to the same size, for a sturdier base before stapling.

  • Stack the digit pages in numerical order on top of the back cover and make sure the front cover/name page ends up on top before stapling.

  • Cut each interior page three-quarters of the way up without cutting all the way through, so the flaps stay attached and flip independently.

  • Have students flip the columns to try several three-digit combinations and say which digit is in the hundreds, tens, and ones place for each.

Skills covered

  • Three-digit place value — students build numbers by flipping independent hundreds, tens, and ones columns and identify what each digit represents.

  • Following multi-step directions — students assemble the flip book themselves using the stacking, stapling, and cutting steps on page 1.

  • Number formation practice — repeated flipping through digits 0-9 in each column gives students hands-on practice forming a range of three-digit numbers.

Questions teachers ask about this resource

How is the flip book put together?

Students stack the digit pages in numerical order over the blank back cover with the name page on top, staple the top edge, then cut each interior page three-quarters of the way up so every column can flip on its own.
