About this resource
What's inside this resource
Are your students learning to read short vowel words? Do your students need picture supports when blending sounds to read words? This set with 24 Short a Word Cards with Pictures is just what your students need. All words are cvc words.
Includes 3 fill in the blank worksheets with and without work banks. Words needed to fill in the blanks are the words on the word cards. Worksheets without the word banks offer students a more difficult challenge. Worksheets provide extra practice for learners to use the words in context. Use the worksheets with the work cards or separately for morning work or homework.
Also works well in a literacy center.
These cards are perfect for building vocabulary with bright, bold, fun clip art. My English learners love these cards.
Word Cards may be printed in color or in black/white.
There are 6 cards per page. Print 4 pages for all 24 cards.
Includes the following words: rat, cat, bat (flying animal), bat (baseball), can, cap, van, dad, fan (hand held), fan (electric), hat, jam, mad, ham, man, bag, pan, map, mat, fat, wax, ax, yak, wag.
These cards are versatile. Look at all the ways you can use them-
✅Blend sounds to read words with picture supports.
✅Build vocabulary.
✅Work on rhyming words both phonemically and phonically (similarly spelled words).
✅Change a beginning letter (cat, bat, rat, hat) or ending letter (cat, cap, can) to make a new word.

Teaching tips & learning objectives
Learning objectives
Decode short-a CVC words (e.g. rat, cap, ham, wax) by blending sounds, using the paired picture as a supporting clue.
Associate the short vowel sound with its common spelling in one-syllable CVC words.
Use context clues from a sentence to identify and write the correct short-a word to complete it, with or without a word-bank prompt.
Teaching tips
Cut and laminate one set of the color cards for a durable, reusable literacy-center or blending-practice set, since the file's own instructions specifically suggest this for repeated use.
Give the black-and-white card set to students to color themselves as a quick engagement activity before using them the same way as the color set.
Move students from the word-bank version of each worksheet to the no-word-bank version once they're comfortable, since the file frames the unsupported version as 'a more difficult challenge' using the identical 8 sentences. When short-vowel words are secure, introduce this long-vowel sentence worksheet with teacher support.
Skills covered
CVC decoding — students read and identify 24 short-a CVC words using picture support across the card sets.
Vowel-sound to spelling association — the short /a/ sound is practiced consistently across all 24 words, matching a common phonics-instruction focus.
Context-based vocabulary — students use a full sentence's meaning to determine which short-a word correctly completes it, across 24 fill-in-the-blank items spread over 3 worksheets.
Good to know
Questions teachers ask about this resource
How do the worksheets differ from the word cards themselves?
The word cards simply pair each of the 24 words with a picture for blending practice, while the worksheets embed the same words into full context sentences with a blank to fill in, offered both with a word bank and without for a harder, independent version.
